I know the owner of the yard and he told me the anvil came from one of those guards houses you see at level crossings. According to him it was sent over from England when the railways were being built here. It's a few months since I saw it, but if I remember correctly it was sitting on a cast iron plinth. Now for the bad news - he said he wanted 2000 euros for it. I'll try and take a few photos of it if it's still there.

How much is it really worth?

How much is it really worth?

A couple of hundred pounds sterling, certainly no more than £300 for a perfect one. Plus to make the maximum use of it, you'd need a full set of top swage tools and a purpose to use them, otherwise it's just a very large, heavy lump of cast steel that's a struggle to move around and guaranteed to bruise a shin on.

I was under the impression nobody knew what it was when you said it was in a "scrap yard".

For €2k it would need to be a monster, over 200kg for example. Then it might be worth that for someone. If it's about a foot square (like mine), you'd be looking at £300-£400 for a good one with no breaks.

my brother bought a brand new one from the army surplus stores local 50years ago. 5 quid he wasn't going to bother as thought it was overpriced anyhow he went and got it

It's a scrap yard, but you're liable to find anything there. I'd say the one I saw was about two foot square. I usually visit the place at least once a week just to see if anything of interest has shown up.

Many moons ago I welded a side car onto the side of a mountain bike, that too was a huge sucess with the kids and kept them entertained for weeks while they mastered it. Its just needs to be different and a challenge

Fitted the hopper to the boat on Thursday and the skipper didn't like the look of the high sides so they were cut off at a slope and some flat welded to the top.
Today has been spent finishing welding the flat and then starting on the frames for the extension to the shelter deck.
I decided to do the shelter deck before the lifting gantry as I will have something to stand on instead of balancing on scaffold planks

There will be a gantry and a wire from the small Gilson winch you can see fitted just behind the wheelhouse will lift the cod end up into the hopper before the cod end rope is released via the door in the front of the hopper.

Found that little one eyed aluminium worm today

Repairing some cracked parts on a canoe. Owner asked if I can weld aluminium. When he said it was aircraft grade I had second thoughts but it seem fine with 5356 filler so I assume it's not 70-series .

Another little hack for myself. Both arms to the xenon levelling systems are broken on my Mazda. Can't be bought without the angle transducer and no one to be found used.
Welded together and fitted, I'll see if it passed mot later this week. If it does this paid for the machine itself since they are about 1200 pounds for both...

Not quite as interesting as the above.

Started making this a few weeks back but delayed after the lathe ate my hand

Had to make a little bushing to spin it up to speed and works well.

First proper spin saw 7 and a half minutes but need a better surface to spin on.

My old Workmate jaws finally gave up the ghost and delaminated to death.

I tried peeling back the layers but it was such a mess in there (bad ply!) I ended up with too thin a sheet. I must have made those jaws five years ago I guess so not too bad and I blame the (perfectly positioned) holes which frankly, I have never used! So this time I went with tanilised 6x2.

Bit soft I know but 9/10 this stand has a top clamped onto it.

For some unknown reason, I found drilling out the holes for the sliders particularly difficult. Marking out was easy but they need to be countersunk (I have plugged the top with mahogany) some of the fittings need to be screwed from the top to engage with the hex fitting alloy bit. I have to keep flipping it over and basically didn't have any of the correct size bits! The jaws have to fully open so that the rear jaw can slide forwards enough to come out of the frame but not so far back the two don't meet in the first position AND so that the front jaw doesn't clout the windy handles.

It really oughtn't to be that difficult but for some reason, I kept getting it wrong or not being able to countersink first so I didn't have to run a spade bit into an existing hole.

Alls well that ends well.

Then I get a lovely new flat bit of 25mm marine ply, fix a 4x2 to the back, job jobbed.

Bit smaller than the last one but much sturdier and less likely to tip. I may decorate it with some hold downs or maybe even a vice!
