Today I removed the old decking boards and relaid new,

Think the dog was confused at first but then approved.
Big brownie points with the Mrs also.

Now don't know what to do with the good old decking boards. Thinking of building a bench out of some and dog house out of the others.

It's flipped and offset ready to be clocked and center drilled.

Biggest bit of stock i have to hand. No margin for error.

Looks like your house was/is/will be a Westbury Homes.

I dont think it was a Westbury home as was built early 1980''s but nice as was the show house back then.

The decking will be recycled one way or another.

Went ok.
Hit all my marks for a snug fit.

Picked up the wrong size drill bit. (Put back in the wrong hole and ended up tapping for m7 with a cheap tap.
Can you guess what happened next...

Didn't bother deburring.
Be easier to remake than getting that tap out.

Good practice for me though.

Yup. Turned one end. Flipped it around and used a bit of tool steel in one jaw to set the offset and keep the work close to true. Removed the tool steel once id tightened the other jaws and tightened it down fully.

Tricky to clock it in but persevered.Had a bit of wobble on the live center so put a dial on the center and a few taps with a soft hammer and was running true.
Not too shabby for a chippie with no machining experience.

Tedious as I have no saddle traverse towards the spindle.
The part in question will rectify it thankfully. Newer rumble reverse bracket fitted to my lathe on only one tumbler engages. About 5mm shy.
Next one wont take as long.

I’ve got back on with the project boat over the last few days. What with the move I’ve not had any time for it but I hope to have it all welded out in the next few days now I’ve got a suitable machine back in the shop.

All I can say is that welding on a ‘real’ job is a lot different to doing a six inch run on a bench.
There’s a few shockers in the hard to reach places that are gonna need a die grind and re-weld or a heal up with a tig but over all I’m not too unhappy with it. If I do another it will be prettier than the first with less distortion as I’d pay better attention to the fit up and make sure there were no gaps.
It’s going to get faired and painted so the worst areas (which are where the front bulkhead meets the floor and where the centre bench seat meets the hull sides) won’t show up at all.
Still, I expected to learn a few lessons along the way and I certainly did.

Took half the time after yesterdays practice run.
Bedstop is the next make. Got plenty of mics. Which one to sacrifice. ..

made this out of scaffs and some old church pews i acquired. The pine on the pews is beautiful....really hard and polshes up beautifully....used satin varnish on this though....Ive got quite a few more
