This fills a gap in the hedge my neighbour is growing after the fence panels blew down and he found the posts had concrete rot.

A front brake strap for my BSA A10. The one that came with the hub, on the right, had the chrome peeling. So i made up a replacement out of a bit of 316 stainless steel, and polished it. The polishing took longer than the making.

Not very hi-tech, i simply put the old strap on top of the stainless, drilled the holes so they were in the right positions, bolted the two pieces together. Then i put a sanding flap wheel in the angle grinder and ground the outside profile. Separating the two i then very gently removed the metal along the shaft to get the oval shape 90%. Then i filed and draw filed the rest, until i was happy with the shape, especially where the shaft meets either end. You cannot beat the hunble file.

Did not take as long as you would imagine, as i said the hand sanding and polishing on the buffer probably took as long as making it. Going to do make a pair of handle bar clamps next, as no one seems to make them, apart from one company who, with postage wants over £50 for them !

made this out of scaffs and some old church pews i acquired. The pine on the pews is beautiful....really hard and polshes up beautifully....used satin varnish on this though....Ive got quite a few moreView attachment 142750

The pews used to be made from Pitch pine, a lovely wood to work with.

I have one decent JIS screwdriver. But always bean disappointed by the design of the handle.
Well today I was very disappointed with it.
It broke.


So a quick phone call to a friend, he has a lathe and time.
So grabbing a few bottles of home brew I left, after grabbing a off cut of Gun Metal Brass.

A few hours we have this.



I silver soldered the handle to the blade, a quick polish and we are away again.

Today I made my garden fence look a bit more presentable. There was some debate over the colour choice between me and Mrs Jim. I wanted green as it would hide what continuously drops off the hedges and trees, she wanted brown like before.
However in the end she came back with grey so neither one of use has to back down

That looks good, what paint did you use? It looks like it covered the wood quite well, I assume you applied it with a sprayer - how many coats?

You have a lot to learn, in situations like that I always say whoever decides the colour has to paint

That looks good, what paint did you use? It looks like it covered the wood quite well, I assume you applied it with a sprayer - how many coats?

I think it was a Ronseal product, silver copse was the colour. I diluted it about 50/50 with water and sprayed it on with a pressurised shed/fence sprayer and then used a brush to even it out. It took about 4 coats to completely cover the old brown but I think you’d do it in 2-3 on a new untreated fence.

I know plenty of people are loving this weather but I am not one, it is killing me, I long for a dull overcast sky
Today I got the gantry fitted, everything went ok except I had to shift a bracket that I had welded to the galluses, no big deal but still a pain.
Anyway a couple of pics.

Next job is to make up the sliding door for the side of the shelter, not looking forward to that
