You mean beams not columns and why are you using UC'S for beams?

UB's as columns is quite common, its used regularly on agricultural buildings as you only need to buy one kind of steel and the bending loads in the columns are similar to those in the beams.
But you tend not to see columns used as beams as the extra width creates weight but not much extra strength in the vertical plane which was why I asked the question.

Sorry, I was a little facetious with my response

My guess is that he was using up steel that was available as like you said, the extra width increases weight. I've done a few jobs recently where UC's have been specced by the engineer as he had to get a higher Ixx value for his calcs ( was limited on height).
Another job had concrete planks resting on the bottom flange , and the best way to get the bearing dimension required for the planks was to use the 203 UC (again limited on his height )

Because its free and I have a lot of it sitting in one of the barns, and it exceeds the original design specifications.

anyway this is what i have been building for the diesel burner

there is a compressor underneath a large one which may need to be replaced so space was needed in case it had to be replaced all done with 80mm box section drilled to wall and 12-14mm bolts in the wall

the ibc is a w 800mm x L 1200mm x H 1000mm only one we could fit through the doors with door cases removed from the wall otherwise it was break the seal on a felt roof and repair after

it can take 130 gallons of fuel in the ibc 600 litres anything over 100 gallons makes the price cheaper to buy

Well. I ain't made much today but got an issue with heat distortion..if you look closely at the pictures below you can see one of my tarmac shoots has a small dog leg in it...I had these clamped to before I welded them...apart from heating the opersite side and trying to straighten them I can't think of another way.

There is a 10x30mm strip to be attached to the face side of this edge..I am in hope it pulls the dog leg out.if it don't it can snag in the runners I have yet to make.

Have you got a fly press ,put thin spacers at the ends and apply pressure into the hollow,if no press ,then hammer it out even using sacrificial blocks to prevent hammer marks.

Well for the last two days its been modifying a MB Unimog, it now has an uprated alternator, replacement upgraded hydraulic pump, new hydraulic feeds to the front and rear AKA agricultural spec, new hydraulic tank, larger hydraulic oil filter, and a new fuel tank arrangement leaving the new stainless tanks higher off the ground for improved ramp breakover angles and undertank protection to this takes the impacts instead of the bottom of the tanks.

I did ask a silly question which was "are the tanks empty" which got a response of him taking me to the offending tank and telling me to look underneath where I saw a piece of tree branch sticking out of the bottom of the old tank.

New pods were made for the new rear lights which are now recessed LED items complete with rear light washers, well, most cars have headlight washers these days.

We also fitted a second hand 20 tonne front winch which is detachable.

Made a few things today for the boats I am fitting out, one was a nylon spacer for fitting a transducer to the hull.

I machined and welded a new end on an small hydraulic cylinder, used to steer a 3t dumper. I put a tig root in for some practise - it didn't need it really, and then put a few runs of 2.5 lo-hy over it

I didn't, it was thick and strong and it glued itself to almost every thing.
