Made a Davit arm yesterday but this morning clamped it in position so that I could get the correct angles for welding on the roller bracket and hauler backing plate. Also marked the position/angle of the base so that it can be glassed to the deck.

Made another pair of hyd cylinder ends for a articlulated dumper steer ram this afternoon, 2" bore to take spherical bearings. Will weld them on tommorow

Making a bush for my lathe as the original nylon one melted....
I got a piece of phosphor bronze from the model engineering show at the weekend.
It supports one of the lead screw drive gears.

I've got to mill the nearest round diameter with two flats so it can slide up and down the gear quadrant. Also have to shorten it a bit so it's a good fit.
Never worked with phosphor bronze before, it machined well but it's hard old stuff!

It now spins nice and freely with no play other than the 0.5mm end float.

Thanks chaps. The milling part had me worried but it went OK in the end. I did make one mistake though and that was not facing the end to the right length before I put the flats on the other side meaning I couldn't mount it in the chuck again!
I ended up milling it down instead but it worked well.
I'm very pleased with it.

Machining, whether milling or turning, requires a thought process for the order to do things in, that is true of both manual and CNC machining. Finding an alternative way of doing things if you get that order wrong is also good, as they say, every day is a school day

My ML10 had a shaft missing for the gears which was stopping me having auto feed and screw cutting functions, so my first real life project was to make one and it came out pretty good, had to file the flats and still got a touch of tidying to do to the sharp edges but so far am happy with it and saved me the £38 for a new one.

Did a test fit and alignment was spot on.

The keyway can be done without, it's not a driven shaft so as long as the two gears can be locked with a pin or a small floating key then they should work fine.

Although I have not given up with some grey matter thinking to sort a key somehow, time will tell.

I could but the lack of an angle plate and small end mill does not help , I am collecting bits and pieces slowly but surely though.

Plus the ML10 has a low top speed and the part is stainless so it may be pushing my luck a bit, although with no previous of milling it may be possible on the lathe and I am unaware of it's capability yet.

If I didnt have a mill then, assuming the keyway can come right to the end I would bore out a bar so it was a good sliding fit over the part and then drill down between the sleeve and the part, remove sleeve and file the half round hole square.

Other way is get a woodruff cutter, attach the part vertically to the tool post by some means and have the woodruff cutter in the chuck align and move in on X to depth required.

I have done that before, problem may be holding the chuck from rotating. On my lathe I just put it in the lowest gear and that was enough, might not be enough on the ML10 so you may have to try and lock some other way..

That small you could run a file through the centre to rough a slot out and take some of the load off the tool and carriage slides.

if you engage backgear without unlocking the bullwheel it locks the chuck up, or at least it does on the super 7

Forgot it would have a back gear. My ML10 was actually a Conect 121 CNC so no gears at all and I just had that in my head that the ML10 would be similar.

This was yesterday but got the davit finished and placed ready for capping the gunwale in stainless, also made a start to the aluminium frame for the shooting table.
