So are those cans empty? with just the copper pipe going straight threw ,or are the pipes soldered to the cans..and full of water?

Cans are empty with the tops and bottoms taken out. The cans do not touch the copper pipe matrix. The cans simply stack but at each end are set into grooves in the boards. The 15mm pipe passes thru a 16mm hole in the board.

The other half of the board gets slid in with a good slug of silicon to try and seal where the pipe goes thru the board. Cans get painted matt black. The idea is the Sun heats outside the can and because of the semi reflective back plate you get some sort of 360deg heating of the can stack. That gets transferred to the air inside the can and into the copper pipe. Sort of Pseudo Evacuated Tubes!

thanks that makes sence, if sun reflects of rear board would it be better to have a gap between each stack of cans so sun can actually get at board?

if you had a gap the sun would go between the cans, whereas now it hits the cans so it's more efficient. The reflector will reflect any heat radiated from the rear of the cans. You may gain a bit of efficiency if the copper pipes and the inside of the cans were painted matt black, and a mirror rather than just white board was used as the reflector. A sheet of glass over the front would help too.

I made a panel out of an old central heating radiator, it was noticeable more efficient with the white paint stripped off and a thin coat of matt black applied. Even better still by leaning a car windscreen against the panel

EDIT It might be better if the space behind the cans was filled with Rockwool to stop heat escaping from the back of the cans.

The finished panel does have a sheet of glass over the front. Behind the ali sheet is indeed 50mm of Rockwool. The whole thing was made from scrap and didn't cost a penny; chipboard flooring and Rockwool off cuts, cans, a bit of greenhouse glass, copper pipe the cat had peed on etc. I didn't even use any tees:

Done for a bit of fun with the kids to try and instill some green/eco values etc.

Have not made much lately...but got round to finishing the battery tray for my volvo fl6 tractor unit....had to make a few bits for it..the original fl6 tray had rotten away and couldn't find any original replacement. So I used this one off of a DAF. Just got to make a lid now and a clamp to hold batteries down.

Wanted to have a socket on my Parweld Tig that was powered via the main switch so that my water cooler could never be switched off whilst I was welding, burnt a torch up a few weeks ago by exactly that happening.
Was just going to bore a hole in the back plate and fit a socket and wire it into the main switch but then decided a better option would be to make a new plate out of Alu, that way if I ever sold the welder it could be put back to the original setup.
Fixed a piece of 3mm Alu to some heavier scrap alu so it didn't buckle whilst in the vice and let the Chiron do its thing.

Gave it a quick coat of etch primer then satin black to match the original.
Here it is on the back of the Parweld.

Because the socket is actually the wrong gender (male pins) I made a Delrin cover for it for the occasional times that there will be no cooler connected, still have to make up a restraining strap so that it doesn't get lost.

Had it apart and refinished it, now it's coming back together:

With the covers on, I'm not sure if I like it more with or without the covers on.
