I made some bolts....a bit smaller that the ones you get from B & Q. I would have used a mug for scale but thought they might have got lost so I used a pound coin. so the dimension if anyone is wondering is M1.6 x 2.5mm long with a head 2.5mm a/f and 1.2mm thick, and they are made from phosphor bronze.

To hold parts together
its for the steam plant for the model boat to assemble the end plates of the boiler and gas tank. even though the end plates are a tight fit in the barrels, one you start heating them up to silver solder them, they will grow and the end plate will fall to the bottom, so its just to stop them moving and keep them in the correct position.......of course I could have just cut off 3 or 4mm lengths of copper wire in holes between the end plates a boiler barrel, but where is the fun in that.

All I did was provided the space, the answers to questions, the tea and coffee and a place to educate someone.
This was at my place today, a new Mini Shed a new member and his care nurse.
The Gentleman has had a lot off issues in the last few years. But he wanted to have a go and doing something useful. But at the Mini Shed this morning the noise and the pressure was to much. So we escaped.
This is what he did. By hand and with me answering his questions.
Two parts to become one.
He had to hand drill the broken remains out. Sand clean the head, inside and out.
Head fitted, for a first go, I think it went very well.
The wedge?
Yes, over kill. But I could sense the nerves pouring off him. When he tried to fit a smaller length wedge with a hammer.
His answer.
Fitted, sanded clean.
Yes. I know it is not perfect. I don't care. He was happy.
Finished.
A small thing is size and importance to a lot.
To him.
A big step.

AHH yes boiler repairs, the fun.

Odd how things get found out.
Again this was by someone else. Same person who did the hammer.
I will say, the lead up to the original breakage had the potential to cause an issue with the gentleman.
The nurse leapt , all ready to pour oil onto trouble waters.
Me: Oh, you broke it. (in jest).
Him: OMG I am so sorry, I didn't mean to. I pay to fix it for you.(Start of panic attack).
Me: No, you can fix it, no harm it is just a plug, an old one at that.
Him: ( have removed the stutter, the words from Nurse.) I don't know how to, it is electricity!!!!
Me: This morning you couldn't restore a hammer, I have spare parts. I have coffee.
Him: You are not angry, mad or cross?
Me: I bust them a lot.
Him: You are not going to tell me to leave?
Me: No, why?
Him: Lost for words.
Nurse: Now calming down, goes and makes coffee.
Old Bakelite plug. Broken. Easily to do and a easy to fix.
First try.
Neutral a bit long, but that was soon sorted.
Done.
This gentleman has got talents, I think he will go far.
This is not in anyway to boast what I can do.
All I did was show and explained to some one who needed something.
I am not doing this for me.
But I will admit I did get a good feeling seeing a human happy.

O crack sparrow Fart this morning.
This what I was working with.
After heating and my version of penetrating oil.
I had a hot oily lump of seized metal.
Boiled up in strong vinegar.
Then a wiz with a wire brush.

Straight out of the "forge" ...
Not really a forge but a wood stove , put it under the fire until became red hot left there other 5 minutes ,then quenched in water .
So now it's hardened tomorrow I will clean it and temper
I don't know what should be a good temper for this
Someone said me blue, some other purple ,other Straw
Hopefully someone here is an expert and can tell me how much heat I have to put in it
Another thing I am not sure is after heating it should I quench it again or leave cooling slowly?

id go to a straw yellow colour.
direct your torch at the center of the head, and quench when the colour reaches the points.
Since I've opted to mostly hide inside today, a few searches on thingiverse lead to this

Clean the metal up to a nice clean, shinny surface.
Build the fire up so you have a small, hot local bed of embers.
Clean the unburnt stuff off. So you have just abed of embers.
Lay the end into the heat, better stiff place the end so the tip is free from the embers.
Watch it.
Look for the blue temper colour to travel from the heated area to the tip.
Quench in clean cold water.
Repeat for the other side.
Ok. This is a pick axe.
But the idea is the same. You can see the way the heat has moved to the tip/
