Build the fire up so you have a small, hot local bed of embers.
Clean the unburnt stuff off. So you have just abed of embers.
Lay the end into the heat, better stiff place the end so the tip is free from the embers.
Watch it.
Look for the blue temper colour to travel from the heated area to the tip.
Quench in clean cold water.
Repeat for the other side.

But the idea is the same. You can see the way the heat has moved to the tip/
And which one is better for this application (it will hit metal)
