Clean the metal up to a nice clean, shinny surface.

Build the fire up so you have a small, hot local bed of embers.
Clean the unburnt stuff off. So you have just abed of embers.

Lay the end into the heat, better stiff place the end so the tip is free from the embers.

Watch it.
Look for the blue temper colour to travel from the heated area to the tip.

Quench in clean cold water.

Repeat for the other side.

Look for blue travelling to the tip.
I understand you are using a wood based fire?

The blue will travel.

the colours go:

purple

yellow is hard, but brittle: good for chisels.
blue is springy, but soft: springs.

brown or purple is good for metal working tools, depending on what you're doing.

it also depends upon the exact grade of steel.
you might be better experimenting.

I've used wood based fire for hardening
But since I have a propane blow torch I am thinking to use it because it's easier to control the heat I thought

The parts I need to be hard are made out of a jackhammer bit
It's tool case hardening steel
I need to be hard enough to leave indentation on mild steel but not too much brittle
Something between brown and purple might be good enough, right?
It will never hit with force on any kind of steel ,it will hit little bit on welding slag , plasma/oxyfuel/arcair slags .
But it will mainly used to scratch on the welding bead sides to break the slag of , removing spatters ,open new welding rods packages (like a knife) .
To have a strong cutting edge I ground it at roughly 135° angle like a drill bit
Did the same on the pointed side but I left a flat spot on it

i'd go for brown/purple as you said.


my last welding "hammer" was a 6inch nail welded to the end of a piece of 25mm shs, so its probably not critical.

I used to have a lawn tractor, a Murray 12/42 made in 1994 with 12Hp Briggs and Stratton
It was funny to watch ,a pain to maintain ,managed to blow up two engines ,had to repair the transmission twice and practically never used
Luckily it was half mine and half of a buddy of mine ,we ended up selling it
If I attempt to make one I will probably make something much better than what I used to own

The dieselross bit, that was just downloaded from the Internet then used Inkscape to convert it to a dxf. The whole thing is the badge from the front of a fendt tractor, the plate is to go on a weight box.

There's some pretty good fonts in emachineshop I've used as well, sometimes need to add bits to keep everything joined up though

Since I've opted to mostly hide inside today, a few searches on thingiverse lead to this

An epicyclic herringbone drive with the planet gears based on a Rouleux triangle shape.
It did start of as a search for some objects of constant width, but this caught my eye instead

That is what the internals of a decent cordless drill gearbox looks like, usually made from metal. In a 3 speed dewalt xrp drill there are several sets of these, 27 gears in total! It's a fun job to take it apart & work out how the speeds change & marvel at the clever engineering.
But unless you have a lot of spare time NEVER take apart a 3 speed makita gearbox, they're very difficult to rebuild!
