This is a build to work out of the pros and cons and what can be done to improve the method.
At a MIS we have member with problems with his arms, that make using tools "Difficult", but we had an idea. The member was actively involved in all steps. Plus when he could he did the work.
First Attempt.
The hammer was chosen for a few reasons.
It was damaged, the head was a good weight and the rubber was cracked.
A friend used a forge to heat and flatten the shaft. That was a mistake. One we found out later.
This was it after it was cleaned and sealed. But adding the spilt wooden shaft and testing it for size we discovered a small, but vital flaw.
So, we binned it and went for a beer.
I then sourced a new hammer to try again.

Why don't try something like the chipping hammer I made ?

One of the original crappy handles on my workmate lost one of it's tangs years ago, so many times it's came out whilst I've been trying to clamp something down,....finally got around to making ones to fit a man's sized hands too.

Attempt Two.
This time a bit of research found that a Estwing Hammer had a flat shaft designed to be strong.
This was located and tested. I knew it was damaged, rusty and no longer suitable as a hammer.
So we teamed up again to have another go.
The dried leather was removed. The rust was removed with citric acid and a wire brush.
Above the hammer are the 2 splits sides of a new wooden shaft. Above them, 2 strips of Pitch Pine to fill the gap between the shaft sides.
The very top is a guide to allow me to split the new shaft down the middle.
The components sandwich together. We learnt that we need a quicker setting glue. But as a prove concept it was good.
The idea is to allow us to learn.
The finished shaped shaft. Cold riveted together as well.
The pattern and shape are for the Member to use the feeling he has make sure he is holding it in the correct orientation.
The shape, again designed to suit his needs.
Finished.
The member will grip the shaft at Rivets 2 and 3.
The longer shaft will rest under his writs area. This we found allowed him to use the hammer as near to normal as possible. Allowing for his issues in his arms.
Ok.
It is not perfect.
We have found out a lot of information on what we need to do, what we need not to do.
Plus it showed that scratch designs are fun to do, but take time and a few attempts.

Cost.
Time.
Plus I am only helping and doing the stuff he cant do.
He could go out and have tools made to suit his needs. But that is very expensive and takes up too 8 weeks to arrive.
This way, he can be actively involved, design it to his needs and what he likes.
Plus others can use them, at a pinch.
It also showed us that it is the build to use is the fun. Not the buy to use.
It wil be a saw next.

The Oil stones from the other day.
Both cleaned up, both wooden cases have a Name of Whitlegate on them. A unusable name, worth a look into.
The lid had a label on it. But it was only the ghost remains from the glue.
Both cleaned up well with brake cleaner and just needed a scrape to true up.

I wouldn’t hold out too much hope. Lego probably won’t make one as the pieces aren’t of the same structural rigidity as Lancia used. You can leave Lego outside and not wonder if it’s going to dissolve in the rain for a start

Interesting setup.A tighter 1" CLR former for my old hilmor. Been putting off for years. Repair job on a Moto Guzzi centre stand is a good excuse. Spare 5/8" one sacrificed its services
