This was my copy of a Sandvik tool I saw years ago. Got a big HTS drill awhile back and thought that the inserts it uses would be ideal for a core drill. ( WCMX). They work a charm

Very similar idea ,just on a much longer scale . See he has loads of videos. Something to watch over the weekend

He seems to be a man of few words. However,gleaned some interesting info from some of the comments he makes underneath his videos...
I had assumed the inner tip needs to be set to cut first. He confirms this,but also gives it an amount that it needs to lead by. Looks like my stagger is greater than optimal. Going to take on board the figure he mentions , adjust it down to that figure,and try it out again.

One of the things to take away from him is his coolant set up. I know your parts are a little shorter than his, but he did a video showing how the coolant flow changes when the inserts are worn, so by looking at the stream, you can know when to stop before damage occurs.

As an aside, for a relatively small diameter and shallow hole, the kerf of the inserts looks huge. Is it that this style of insert is only available in that size? Or that the interchangability of the cartridges over many diameters is important?

For your current application (75mm dia., 35mm deep), could you share your thoughts on why you have gone for a core drill and not a Rotabroach.

They are homemade cartridges using a wcmx 05 insert. You cannot go much smaller unless you want to be messing around with M2 bolts to hold them in. Besides, pissy little inserts are fragile.

Went for this style as you will never bang a 75mm diameter hole through a 35mm thick billet of En3b with a Rotabroach sub 1 minute, and time is money.

Swarf is large as the feed was too low and not chipping yet. First hole was to check nothing rubs.

Today [well yesterday] I let the magic smoke out of my Flymo mower - however, it's 8 years old so I don't think it owes me anything.

Stripped it down and was amazed at the amount of dry, dead grass hiding in behind the casings - to the extent that I could hardly see the motor. More a fire hazard that a device for cutting grass....

Part of this post could also be in the "Things that bug you" thread, getting all the plastic covers/shrouds off was a nightmare - free off one clip and another snapped shut. I was getting to the stage where an introduction to BFH and a search for a replacement was imminent , but a cool drink in the heat and patience & perseverance prevaled.

New motor & drive belt [it would be daft not to] ordered ex the 'Bay and have spent today cleaning all the bits up preparatory to reassembly when the bits arrive. I'm pretty good at cleaning the mower after each session, but of course there's 80% that you can't access in ordinary use. And need I add that damp grass sets like concrete when left to its own devices.....?

Anyway, homemade chicken curry for tea tonight with the a nice beer or 1/2 bottle of red to accompany it
Won't rival @Parm's culinary expertise but it'll be edible.....

Finally got round to making a backboard, & fitting, my 12V battery holder last weekend. Nowt fancy, & the holesaw I used left the underside of the board a bit raggy, but it keeps them stored & easily accessible.
