Sometimes you have to admit, you can not fix everything.
You have to say enough is enough.
Here are 2 projects where I had to stop throwing time, effort and funds at.
Both tested before strip down and considered worth going for it.
Sweet, I was even looking into making waterslide transfers for both.
But, there is always a but.....
No pressure just the weight of the water, not a happy TYA.
Fix that leak, a split, test get another leak, fix that, repeat.
Until.
I am forced into fitting a repair band. Done this before and 99.99% of the time it works.
NO THIS(Insert your own bad words) TIME.
It will leak from a new split, crack under the fingers. Fix that and another leak appears.
Only good for spares now, or looking pretty in the back of a cupboard.
Otto Benze Blow torch.
First issue after the rebuild, it's a Benzene fuel torch.
This can be worked around, but paraffin will be suitable for a hot test.
Warming up.
Fill the bowl with "Meths." and light. Just before it goes out, crack the on/off valve to allow a drip of fuel to ignite, then open until a dribble is burning. Leave until it "Roars" into life.

Spot what is wrong.
We have a run away flame, the valve is off, but not sealing.
Plus one more small ish issue.
No I am not telling the truth.
As it is a pressure vessel and this is a common ish design, it will be for display only.
Plus the runaway can only be fixed by a new needle valve and a new burner head. it is a fixed jet.
Not worth it.
So.
Given to a friend, so she can do something artyfarty with. Then I can admire her assets.

Why stop at one?
This came my way for a few sheckles.
I knew it had issues, the seller tried to tell me the pop rivets were fine to hold 30PSI plus.
The fact you could hear air leaking from them was plane to hear.
So I walked away until I got a suitable discount.
In bits, but to remove the pump and pressure gauge you needed a special tool, at a small fortune one can be "Loaned."
It is soft brass, odd size and the lack of space makes getting a spanner in is nearly imposable.
So I raided my Fire extinguisher tools.
Me pay for extra bits, only when I need to.
The pop rivets, what a mess.
They had not sealed, they had cracked the body as well.
The lead solder had bean repaired in the past.
So I had a coffee, had a think and hatched a cunning plan.
2 brass screw inserts and 2 M6 bolts silver soldered into place.
The inserts had enough space on their flanges to cover the cracks, the silver solder also flowed into the cracks not covered.
Cooling showed a small issues, the body twisted. But a gentle warm and a "Tweak" had them straight.
This shows how little space there is on the top.
Finished, almost.
The terrible gold paint removed, the metal polished and suitable seals, bar 2 are fitted.
Yes it does work, but I need to get 2 more seals.
Non return valve seal and the pump top seal need to be ordered.
Grat. issue picture of it warming up.
The missing seals are causing the cold flame.

With reference to the above repair with inserts and silver solder.
Yes it is a pressure vessel.
Yes, it contains flammable liquids.
But The repair was done by an experienced welder, we had a long hard discussion on the safety and dangers of such a repair.
The plan was simple.
If it failed at any stage, it would be scraped. Or at least turned into a light.
The unit was washed out and dried out.
Then cleaned on the inside with a solvent based cleaner.
The outside was buffed up and the old lead solder melted off. Then the area cleaned again.
The inserts are pre tinned with silver solder, as were the bolts.
Then they were gas welded on.
Allowed to cool.
Then rebuilt using the old seals. Then using the on board pump taken up to 10PSI, then left. Taken to 30PSI and dropped into a tank of water.
Pressure gauge was leaking, pump was leaking and the non return valve was leaking.
All but one was fixable, the non return valve. New parts needed.
So a blanking plug was used to charge the unit to 60PSI.
Submerge into a tank of warm soapy water, for 90 minutes.
No leaks.
Not a repair to be taken on lightly, but with care and planning it can be done.

Is it the bit at 2 minutes 30 seconds, it does look like I'm unloading in the field but it's just the yellow sock on the end of the spout making it look like that, wasn't dumping anything.

Nearly finished lining the shed, can't wait to be done with it and get back to uni.
There's a bigger gap than I'm happy with on the left where the ceiling meets the wall but it'll get hidden with trunking when I wire the light in properly. I'm blaming my tools, would have came out perfect if I had a tracksaw.
At least the nailgun is earning it's keep.

Today I am totally ***!
But I will get off my butt and carry on. Running around on a roof with 16' 2" x 8" rafters over my shoulder is a game for young lads. 3/4" ply this afternoon. Oh whoopee!

Found some rusty old circlip pliers at the back of a cupboard that hadn't been opened in years so thought I'd have my first go at electrolysis, bought some acetic acid powder. Buffed up on a wire wheel and applied some ACF-50.
Now I've got the acetic acid I've started doing the same on some old Stillsons that a neighbour gave me a few years ago...
