Went to the workshop this evening and decided to start on the new welder wall bracket/cooler.

Had done a redesign to my first drawing, this one had one piece sides.

So into steel container and cut out a side on the plasma. Only had enough for the one side, thought I had more but nothing big enough

Chopped up some of the 150mm x 10mm and the 4" x 4" x 1/4" wall box and started welding it up. Not sure why but getting a lot of soot today, checked everything and all is fine so the only two things that have changed is a new roll of wire and a new cylinder of Argon, I suspect if anything it may be the Argon.

Anyway this is as far as I got, will have to see if I can find enough smaller pieces of plate to get the second side made up in 2 or 3 bits.

Oh and a howler of a vertical weld that I will have to grind out and redo

Ah, never spotted the fill cap, what are you adding to the water for the coolant. I'm tempted to just add Isopropyl Alcohol to mine.

I just use the readymix Parweld stuff.

Possibly the spot is down to not sanding off your oxide layer. Some of that material looks like it's been hanging around the shop for a while.

Don't think that is the problem Jim, this stuff is like new, it is less than 2 weeks since I got it and compared to the stuff I usually have it is pristine Also some of the welds had been prepped, for example the butt weld in the pic above, so it was clean.
Will try some different wire tomorrow and will also make sure I have clean material but I suspect the gas, shame I put the cylinder from the boatyard back yesterday or I could have tried it.

Another thing I noticed, I did not get the cleaning action down either side of the weld like I normally do with the EWM.

Was 15LPM as normal but tried higher and lower with little difference.

Changed put the wire today and just the same so, as suspected, that is not the issue. Also made sure the oxide was well cleaned off and again not the issue.
I will see if I can borrow the Boatyards Argon tomorrow and see if that makes a difference.

Found a manky bit of Alu that was almost big enough for the second side so cut it on the plasma, pic below of it plus the small bits that will have to be welded on to complete it.

That has made me feel better, now I know I'm not the only one that does things like that.

Like when I'm making an angle iron frame with 45's in the corners and I cut the angle on the wrong face of the steel, then discover I haven't enough stock left to make a replacement. My common one is cutting the mitre the wrong way on skirting board - I normally start with the longest side so I can reuse it if I mess up!

I needed the brackets to be 6 inches long but had enough angle in one length to make them 9 inches, 9 inches is apparently better than 6 so I made them using all the angle, of course if I'd made them in the original length I'd have had a big enough offcut to re make it.

Thankfully the brackets will work either way round and it won't affect anyone but my own OCD :-)
