The signs of water ingress were truthful; a bit of a swimming pool in there, lots of corrosion on PCBs and the grinding noises were thoroughly banjoed plastic planet gears in an epicyclic gearbox. It's a curious mix of quite well engineered and utter chod inside.

A Dansette, reel-to-reel recorder or perhaps a cunning portable photographic enlarger. The last time I saw a fitted case like that it had a magnetometer inside, so it could be a surprise.

The missus played one similar to that, it sounded like the Spanish inquisition were torturing a heretic cat. I bought her a half decent UK one and it made all the difference, she sounds pretty good now.

I had no idea what was in the box, until it was opened.
I am presently surprized how close your guess were.

It is now at a local music shop, to see how much it is worth. I know it as an old model. The shop tried a Metric reed and they did not fit. An imperial one did and they got a tune.

I never want to hear " Baa Baa Black sheep" again.

I picked up some exactly the same a few years ago from a building being gutted and refurbed. A bit longer that that set and brand new.
Expensive and very strong.

There were two sets but I couldn't fit the others in so had to let them go to someone else!
