I doubt that you will find cadmium plated items nowadays unless its perhaps an aerospace or other specialised application, the colour will just be a gold or yellow passivate.

Something to be careful of when begging stuff from a MOD salvage yard.

Cadmium's on the RoHS restricted substance list, so there's not much chance of new products being cadmium plated.

Also, I don't think it'll get that hot - it's just used for tacking. If it gets very hot, the magnets will let go.

Late-night looking at amazon is always a risky affair, but this actually looks quite useful and worth the £20 it cost:

A couple of quick tests holding random stuff to random stuff - in case it isn't obvious, the idea is that it holds stuff while you tack it in place:

The springy bit turns on the body bit and the magnets pivot, so it clamps onto round stuff too:

Mine arrived today; I'm mighty impressed for the money - arguably more useful and potent than a welder's 'third hand'.

Today I acquired a rather large and heavy grinding wheel balancer from a Favretto way grinder with 700 x 250mm capacity. Already stripped down for refurbishment but ran into a small problem... You have to destroy the bearings to get the wheels out! No matter, I've found replacements... For a price... Lucky the budget isn't constrained!

A phase converter arrived today for the Fobco pillar drill. Went for a simple digital one as I don't need the VFD feature. Purchased on ebay, shipped from South Korea, it arrived in less than a week and all fees, taxes, and delivery charges were included for the £119.oo price. Now I just need to fabricate the appropriate size mounting plate and find a local experienced electrician to sort out the machine's wiring and hook it up.
