This picture is the latest lot from Norbert's donation to the Vark Pile of stuff.
Everything, but not the saw handle, the irons and the bit and brace are soaking in a hot tub of citric acid.
Leather and brass tape measure, 38 feet long and dated 1938, with a calibration stamp.
Buffed up with bee's wax, well it is covered as the leather was so dry and you can hear it going glooooup gloooooop as it seeps in.
Yes, old flat irons, thick with paint and heavy.
Base looks newer than the irons, as yet no actions on them.
But watch this space.

My Mum used to use a flat iron like those as a doorstop.

Here they are, after 24 hours in a 80Deg C Citric acid bath.
Followed by a hose down.
The Bit and brace was smothered in flour and vinegar and wrapped in a plastic bag. Left for 24 hours and washed off.
But it needed a wizz with a wire brush in a drill to get a decant finish.
The tape measure is now buffed up, the brass needs some more TLC. The leather has now gone soft and the cracks have closed up.
The rulers and the feeler gauges need a bit longer. One now at least opens.
There was 3 hammers in the bundle, 2 are in the original image, one I missed out.
The smaller one of the three I need to acquire/make a new haft for it.
But the other two ended like this.
Yes, they are short hafts fitted. Not because I didn't have any long hafts but for a simpler reason.
I have donated them to my Men In Shed (ladies are also welcome) and I made them suitable for the wheelchair user to be able to use them with ease.
See a simple reason.
Plus that's they were the only shafts worth saving in a older pile.
But don't tell any one that.

This morning I nipped into see a friend, I knew he was bunking a few hours over time. This week he was telling me about a new media blaster they have for small parts.
It looks like an industrial dish washer, Hobart is a name of the type it looks like.
Well I had to have a play.

If you have no joy Salient Services have been recommended to me on here so bear them in mind. Wish I'd been told before selling a kidney to pay IF to do the repair when mine died...

thanks for the heads up, what was the symptoms of yours not working, did ifl tell you what had failed at all?

Symptoms were I was welding and it just died. Opened it up and there was something clicking but I couldn't see why.
Sent it off to IF who said it needed a new board. Tbh I highly doubt it was anything more than one or two dodgy components, but I was stuck.
I sent another machine off at the same time which arced but with no power, and allegedly that also needs a new board. Bargain price it was too, only £80 less than a brand new machine with 3 years warranty. Oh, and only £30 to take a look to inform you it doesn't work.
I shan't be using their repair service again.

I think it is hand made, I have the big one and waiting to be restored is a smaller one.
Both are well made, no markings on either.

there are quite a few 6013 murex and ersb but also a few others 7012?from memory and some pink ones lol
Bill, it seems to be the same old same old crud off them (repairers manufacturers)all the time, Oh it needs a new board £200 of your well earned all the time, Plus this plus that. They've got to be at it.
