They gave us a price breakdown;
And a blurry picture of the whole door, I can't see the damage there but the Comic Sans proves it is our door.

All ironmongery is reusable. No need to replace it.
Will be a fd60.
Identical to a 30 but the installation method changes it.
Glazed but looks close in finish.

I recon theyve billed for all new ironmongery and possibly frame door combo rather than just replacing the door.
Take me a couple of hours to chage that over. Would assume the intumescent strips are rebated in the frames too making it easier.

Did they recieve 3 quotes in writing.

I hope you were lucky enough to get pukka WBP. A sheet I was assured was WBP fell apart in a year. Utter rubbish.

how long since last done?
they can only charge you for the remaining percentage lifetime.
are there pictures of the door from when you moved in? put them to strict proof it wasnt already damaged.
was your deposit put in a goverment scheme? big no-no if not. (you can claim 3x amount of deposit as compo)
if it was put in ascheme, then argue the deduxtion through their apoeals procedure.
find a tame chippy (@eLuSiVeMiTe ?) to give you a report saying that its an extortionate amount for a door - im sure the university bursars dept (or whatever its called nowadays) will be interested in the fact theyre being significantly overcharged for repairs.

If it were me, I would post this extortion on you tube, naming the extortionists and see how viral it goes. There appears to be nothing in the photo that a few drops of furniture polish on a rag wouldn't cover.

I have a mate that goes all over the country fitting and refitting fire doors in hospitals government buildings and flats . the firm charges a grand a door . 
that's pretty standard going rate. if the gear isn't there when they turn up or any other reason they cant fit they still get well paid . he had 30 hours stand by time in last week doing nothing

This has jogged my memory, back in the late 70's my Dad bought the old Ironmongers shop in our town. It was an Aladins cave to me, loads of stuff from decades gone by to investigate. Back then everyone had coal fires (no piped gas until the late 80's) and he used to sell asbestos sealing strips for parkray and other fires of that ilk!
It was also the sort of place that sold parrafin by the pint/quart/gallon, nails by the pound, fork handles etc etc that have all but dissapeard now
