C1



C1 gives you 7500kg on a ridged vehicle & a 750kg trailer.

It does not give you 8250kg split as you like between units.

C1+E gives you 8250kg split between units on a pre 97 or 1200kg on a post 97. However like you said the trailer cant weigh more than the vehicle.

You need C+E.

You cant have over run brakes on a trailer of over 3500kg. Some landrovers can tow 4000kg if trailer has active brakes.

hi i will come back to you about licenses, i need to make sure i am legal , fiver has electric brakes which are operated from a controller in the cab
although vosa recommend ( might even be enforce ) that the controller is in the trailer, not sure how they expect you to change the settings on while your driving,
maybe the passenger has to risk life and limb and climb across break into the trailer and make the adjustments for you

on the injector pump there is a switch, just a simple on/off switch that the arm operates when on full travel, what would need to know when you have the throttle fully open ? any ideas

i'm pretty sure its a six cylinder... the two middle extractors are shared between 4 cylinders

well they only had 4 injectors so maybe they shared them aswell!!
the atego 815 I work on now is a four pot.

Under current legislation, category BE allows you to drive a category B vehicle (ie upto 3500kg GVW) towing a trailer of any weight (if the towing towing is plated to do so). I used to operate a mini artic which had a GVW of 3500kg and GTW of 8700kg that came under the BE licence category. Be aware that any trailer over 3500kg with require air brakes and an annual MOT type test. Vehicle/trailer combinations over 7500kg GTW will require a tachograph, even for private use.

The 8250kg GTW limit that people often get confused with only applies to C1E vehicles (ie GVW of towing vehicle 3501 - 7500kg) for people who were given the category by default for passing their test before 1st January 1997.

no over run brakes on a fiver, they are operated by the towing vehicle as would an artic, in my case they are electric but some use air

makes sense , only thing i see that l might contend is that air brakes are not compulsory now electric is acceptable and we dont mot or test caravans in this country which is what we are towing ?

thats a possibility but l cant see any electrical connection to the allison except the speedo drive cant even see the inhibit switch to stop her starting in gear,
could that have been incorporated into the gearshift lever, which i dont have at this time

the kickdown notification seems to be an air pipe up to the inlet manifold bit like the old ford autos from the seventies except i imagine the inlet would be positive pressure not a vacuum but i guess it could use air pressure to determine how hard you are accelerating and whether to go down a gear ??

Not sure I agree with the Tacho rules quoted on there. Private towing is not a tacho controlled activity.


If you take your B+E today (after 19/01/2013) you are limited to 3500kg trailer weight.

If you want to tow a trailer weighing more than 750kg, when the combined weight of the towing vehicle and trailer is more than3,500kg, you’ll have to pass a further test and get B+E entitlement on your licence.

You’ll then be able to tow trailers up to 3,500kg.

what does that tell you ?

empty truck weighs 2000 kg on the weigh bridge and in the manual, it can carry 4400kg giving the max gross weight of 6400kg as the plate says
i can tow a trailer as long as my combined weight dosent go over 9500kg second line on plate
3rd line is the front axle max weight which is 2000kg, now the whole truck only weighs 2000kg so unless its doing a handstand it cant normally be 2000kg can it, ?
its split roughly 1000kg on the back axle and 1000kg on the front axle CLEARLY indicating the front axle can take an increase of 1000kg over its unladen state,
given that i can put 4400 kg in the back that makes sense as l would expect 25% of that to appear on the front axle
fourth line is max weight on the rear axle 4650kg confirming that if i put my max load on board 3600kg of it can be on the rear axle while the other 1000kg appears on the front axle

thats telling me i can load the front axle by 1000kg and still be with in specs, now the volvo engine and box is around 300 kg heavier than the the iveco engine l took out and its mounted much further back placing a good proportion on the rear axle not the front

why would you doubt it will take the extra weight ( which l doubt exsists on the front axle )

when l find some suitable forklift scales l will string it up and see

no probs octo, i never thought you were, l would have liked springs to then l could have added air bags if l needed them, iveco seem to use leaf springs on the smaller versions of the iveco then move over to torsion bar for the heavier models, not what you would expect but l want the running gear absolutely stock so l dont run unto grief with the men from the ministry in white coats

Sussed out the throttle switch,------- when on full throttle, it puts the blues n twos on!!! -------or calls the refueling tanker to prepare to pull in front for in flight refueling, 3mpg

I think you may have trouble with men in white coats( but not from VOSA) having ideas like that
ps you still havnt answered the bulkhead question

ok sensible question
why do they use rivets on commercial vehicle chassis to fix the cross members to the side rails like this



the 2 top ones are rivets the 2 bottom fixing are bolts, clearly l can grind the rivets off if i want to, which i do as l am thinking it would be easier to shot blast and paint as 2 side rails and 5 cross members but how do i put it back together, nuts and bolts would be easy but why are they rivets in the first place, they must have done it for a reason in the factory, it could be speed of assembly, or there is no chance of a rivet working loose over thousands of miles, or its strong but will allow some flex in the chassis, the rivets are 10mm diameter l dont have the means to replace the rivets but would like to strip the chassis to make a better job of painting,
do you think bolting it back together would be acceptable or does anyone on here have the means to rivet it back together for a small consideration ??

after all you are doing Andy would you have been better off buying a F250 4x4 diesel or importing one i know you prefer RHD but left hooker are easy to get used to
