Why not centre mount the winch Land Rover 101FC style?, a rotating pulley would allow you to pull from the front, back or side

a plate something like this (forgive my ms paint skills)

red bits run fell length of plate

with an arm coming off and going back to that other mounting point that's a little further along the chassis (the square plate welded to the tube) - idea being that extra arm will stop the plate the winch is fixed to trying to twist up or down - could weld that onto the back of the blue winch plate and to the two red strengthener bits too

it's overkill, but I think that's what you want?

it's the strongest way I can think of doing it because the winch will pull straight onto the tube chassis instead of at 90' to it - any other way and the winch is pulling/twisting on your welds/joins

- you might need to move the guide bits the winch wire goes through, or maybe put a new one on instead ? (the roller bits that guide the wire on/off the drum)

Robotstar the center mount is an interesting one alright, will have to look at te setup on the 101. I fairlead could be fabbed up I reckon for Knighty's idea.

8 mill plate, it weighs as much as I do.

hmmmm. anyways the truck, i bought a plasma cutter, and then a compressor to run the plasma, and i extended my shed, and a million other things. been busy.

Bought an aldi compressor for 200 euros, 3hp, its a beast. Took a while to get the plasma to say yes to the compressor last night, teething problems, but ended up getting some decent cuts. Not perfect, but good, am pleased.

must be a pretty beefy cutter too, nice cuts for thick stuff :-)

new yah, got some good tips on here that shortened the learning curve. Am using some 40mm angle to guide the torch, but I find there is a small bit of friction between the steel and the torch head, so is causing me to jerk / stop / start a little. Need to iron that out, find a way to make the action smoother.

The plasma gives off rays of light that are really strange looking, its like sci fi or something, pretty cool.

gonna be slow progress with this, cos work are on my nuts at the mo, over the next two weeks. Which is a dog, cos this is getting to an interesting stage for me.

offered the thingy up to the truck, fits like a glove, 1mm gap on each side between the chassis tubes, uncanny.

lil bit more progress, just offered it up really, so I can see where to make the next cuts.

The bit sticking out at the front will be cut and then folded up and a fairlead hole cut in it. Will try do it in such a way that it looks cool, with a two stage bend.

I had to drill a 12mm hole with this... I have a pillar drill but the winch tray is too big to get it onto the drill, so my poor little makita is suffering as a consequence. I reckon I'll ruin the gearbox if i do much more of that. .... just remembered i have a weaponish bosch 110v drill I can use, nice one...

If you think it's going to ruin the gearbox there must be something wrong...
My Makita cordless has drilled vast quantities of 13mm (and some 27mm ) holes through varying thickness of steel, the only problem in the 9 years or so of this is the feeling that your wrist will snap when it breaks through!

ah sound, thats good to hear. I started using the bosch 110v last night and quickly realised why i put it away years ago.

It has a keyless chuck thats a pain to use, and it spools up to speed... ....and it s*** goes wrong it spools down, it doesnt just stop.

I was boring a 10mm hole and it caught in the hole. The drill flew out of my control... time slowed down, I was thinking, is that trigger lock on.... - it was scarey.

The makita just stops immediately, much safer to use. I think I'll sell the bosch, I dont like it!

trick to stop the drill catching is to ease off the pressure when you're about to go through - it's the last bit of the cut which catches, when the last bit of metal is thin enough that you can bend it and push through

drill bends the metal, pushes through, and half a turn later it comes around and catches the two metal splinters it just bent :-(

cheers for the explanation Knighty. Ya nothing makes up for time spent, and i dont get to spend that much time, so still a lot to learn.
This is the offender, I was right its the model bigger than the above, beast of a yoke, I have it listed on adverts.ie cos I do not like it.

Arthur hey ) yah the winch tray is more suited to this site, when i get that finished I'll be back over when i get onto the vehicle specific stuff. I actually found out I can register it.... without going into details the truck came out of a zinc mine and has never been cleared for road use. I found out last week its possible and do-able, so that lit a fire in my brain to get it finished.

some more progress.

scavenged some 10mm for the uprights, everything else is 8mm plate.

I don't welding like riding a bike. I often find I'm out of practice, and it takes me a while to get back into it.

someone tell me this isnt strong enough! ..... watch, someone will..... i dont see this distorting in any way. I cant see how it would. maybe someone can enlighten me.

more progress tomo. Am having a blast with it at the moment. Modded the wiring to the shed so the plasma will run dependably, which is nice. Gonna make the terminator winch mount tomo, or at least thats the plan.

Is there a reason you're not welding the entire length of the joint? I would, and both sides, too.

Edit: also, the welds look a little high - are you definitely getting enough amps in?
I'd do some trial pieces with the 10mm first and then cut it with a grinder to check penetration. You definitely don't want any of that letting go...
