A few random stainless jobs

So a bloke comes in and wants a couple of heavy duty stainless steel bolts for a door, with these little jobs it doesn't really take any longer to make four than it does to make two, so he has taken his and these two will be fitted to the inside of my garage door,

Some stainless steel gulley covers for a potwash area in a commercial kitchen, made from 25x5 flat outer frame with 20 x 5 infill, they curl up like a banana when welded, but the flypress soon sorts them out.

Some conveyor legs, made from 3" x 16swg pipe, its old stuff re used and not in the best of condition but supplied by the customer for a no frills project.
The bottom plate is 10mm with an M16 nut on the inside for an adjustable foot, the top plate is a laser cut with a large hole right through and the pipe is welded on the back side,

Two of these trolleys sent out today, part of a chemical works production line, they will have a plastic panel with an upstanding bottom lip fitted on the sloping part, they are for holding 25 litre containers at a comfortable angle to apply the labels, at 2500mm long they are bigger than the photo makes them appear.

Little frame knocked out today, its a plinth to build a cupboard on in a wet bathroom, not too many pictures of the build, its basic stuff and I've shown it all before.

Just fits on the bench which is handy.

Sometimes a joint needs a bit of persuasion to close it up for tacking, not much pressure needed so use a clamp on a clamp.

And the finished job, its not very big at 1400 long and 250mm high, made from 25 x 25 stainless box section

Do you never use something underneath those clamp feet Paul?
I used to do it like that but found sometimes the clamp feet would mark the stainless finish so I cut small squares of fire blanket now and just pop it under the feet which now lets me apply decent force without marking the finish.

Not much pressure on those so I didn't bother, many of my clamps have circles of masking or gaffer tape on the feet, I've got a selection of P/e blocks for when a bit of force is needed, even a padded clamp will dent thin box section,

Little job this morning, a stainless fire tray,
It will be built into a brick structure so mostly wont be seen, just enough cleaning up to make it presentable to the customer.

And with the burner fitted, its still wrapped in plastic

A bit of machine guarding here, its 30 x 30 x 3 stainless box, those that have ever welded it will know how much it distorts when welding so a bit of thought with welding sequence and a lot of air quenching to keep the heat down on this one,

Make up one end and then use it as a jig to build the second one

Then assemble it, the bits of red oxide UB have levelling bolts in them for laying up jobs like these, as you can see the floor has a bit of a slope on it, plenty of clamps make the job easy(ish).

And completed, the sun made a decent photo a bit tricky but you'll get the idea, its 2.5 mtrs long and about 1.2m square so bigger than the photo makes it look.

When using individual leveling stands / feet such as the cut girder with adjuster screws . how do you align them if say ...you are using a five metre long 30 mm square tube for the frame you need to build .

I ask because I tried to use a simple laser pointer set in a level ( accuracy of +- 0.01% per mtr ? ) . I used two 75 mm lengths of equal 50 mm angle aluminium clamped them back to back, scribed off using the block& a marking plate at 19 mm . then drilled a 1.5 mm sighting hole through both on the drill press.

It took ages to get them aligned and the stand blocks leveled & true , did I over think things , is there a much simpler way of truing things level over long distances?

Use a long clear plastic tube fill (almost) with water. Water level at each end will always be perfectly aligned.

You could do the same thing in a large swimming pool but using a tube is much easier.

Seems way over complicated to me, a spirit level and a straight length of rhs or similar. combined with a quick check of diagonals with a tape are more than adequate for this kind of work, try not to over think simple problems, you just end up chasing issues that don't exist.

A cover for a raised pond, bit of a funny shape but made to the customers dimensions, hope it fits.

Quick job knocked out today, a couple of big spanners from 10mm stainless bar, fabricated from bits all tigged together and made to reach inside a machine.
Functional rather than decorative and made to a price, so no frills on this job.

Another stainless job knocked out this week, access steps to a control room in a chemical works, treads are off the shelf galvanised,
Start by making some stringers

Then start to build the legs and handrails, and fit some baseplates,

Baseplates are a bit bigger than I would like, but were supplied by the customer

Then a bit of railing to go onto the landing, mid rails fitted diamond style.

And finished, bigger than it looks, couldn't find me mug so Peugeot 406 estate for scale.

Did you have to isolate the stainless from the galv, or is it for an internal fit?

I like that idea of turning the mid rails through 45 degrees, might have to pinch that
