A few random stainless jobs

A couple of stainless steel air manifolds, part of a filling machine, 2.2 metres long, 40 x 40 x 4 box section with 1/2" BSP half sockets welded on, not a posh job, just need to be clean.
2 down 2 to go.

A stainless steel platform / bridge to span a conveyor, too big for the bench so laid up on these bits of beam, these have jacking screws to get them level and are really handy for this kind of work. its 50 x 50 box section with the rails 30 x 30 set diamond orientation.
The back frame

Front frame slightly different, get some clamps on it

Then frames assembled and turned on its side for welding

And stood up, this is as far as I take it, the customer will be fitting the decking and the staircases, I am making the handrails though, photos to follow in a day or so.

Stainless frame sent out today, part of a bottle filling production line, made from 50 x 50 x 5 box and way over specced for what its doing,

Build a side frame then use it as a jig to make the other side, not too much weld at this stage.

Trusty corner jigs to help set up the cross members, lots of checking for square and double checking and measuring diagonals to keep it true, then weld a bit here and weld a bit there to control distortion,

And the finished job, total weight 185 kg, and with the temperature this week glad to see the back of it.

Just shy of £1000, five lengths bought and about 3m left over, wasn't the only shock on the job either, I was sitting astride it to weld one of the corners and hadn't noticed that the return clamp had dropped off, you can guess where the hf tracked, I can now confirm that its possible for a human to perform a vertical take off !!.

only posting because I normally have no input/idea on the prices of stuff mentioned here.... but I just bought a load of 304

80x80 3mm wall welded sqr tube £41.60/meter
40x40 3mm wall welded sqr tube £20.65/meter
10mm round bar £37.50/meter (this was 75 of 100mm lengths, prob pushed price up)

all +vat

no idea how that compares, I hardly ever buy stainless

Hi Paul, could you tell me the spec of that wire mesh? About to build a guinea pig hutch of all things and as I'm a bit OCD, I wont be using chicken wire, or cheap mesh. The hutch is getting built in hardwood and will be insulated!

Its just plain old 1" x 1" x 10swg stainless weldmesh, also available in mild steel copper washed or galvanised if you want something a bit cheaper.

I used to own a small licenced / registered mammal farm breeding for the pet trade in large numbers .

. Amongst many animals I bred guinea pigs , had 30 breeding pairs . The shelters 24 x 24 x 24 a the front sloping back to 16 inches with wooden floors and stood on six black engineering bricks set on their side . They were stuffed full of hay & straw and well water proofed with lift off lids the front had a 4 inch round access hole and the whole run area was made with 30 mm animal friendly treated pine frame covered with 1/2 " chicken wire on the top and sides and inch mesh over the grass . The run was securely attached to the hut with spring snecks to stop foxes ,badgers ,feral cats & stray dog getting at them . Each hut had a slid down pop hole cover in a slide , had a cable on the top so I could pull the door up and slip a wooden peg in it to hold it up . at night they were called into their hutches 7 shut in for the night . the access hole centre was set about 7 inches up from the base . two more bricks made a step up to the access hole.
The huts & pens were moved to fresh ground every 10 days and were cleaned & spray sterilised at the same time using dilute virkon S.

None returning to a former used place till at least 36 days had passed .
The lids were eventually weighted down with four solid black engineering bricks again to help stop foxes , badgers , stray dogs & feral cats as well as the effects of strong winds lifting the lids off . At the first frost they were all brought inside and housed onn a polished concrete floor that had de dusted shaving on the run floor and the same straw hay hut fillings.

Don't insulate the huts too much as they will sweat and wet the beddings when it gets cold . The high up access hole allows them to make decent beds in the bedding

" Guinea pigs , goats , monkeys & men ...............… can't make vitamin "C" them'sen " .

All need to have fresh greens in their diet regularly or they will get scurvy and develop large open sores , which most vets treat as a mite infection . I grew a hardy " everlasting / perennial " Kale " Chou D' au Benton " for all my stock to have some fresh greens at least twice a week ( still grow it as it's also good human greenery too " .

These seem quite expensive although I don't normally buy these sizes and all of mine is 316 so should be cheaper for 304.
Last time I bought some 40 x 40 x 3 was a couple of years ago and it was £13.50/m
Bought some 10mm Dia 316 2 months ago, only one length at 3m and it was £10 for the 3m

I was suspicious I was overpaying... hardly ever buy any so think the salesmen sees me as an easy target :-o

It really annoys me that they rip people off. I can understand someone who buys big quantities will get get a better price but the difference should not be massive. Aalco used to rip me off stupid but when I found another supplier the price difference was massive, £500 as opposed to £800.
The Aalco rep came for a visit after I had not bought for a couple of years and asked why, I told him they were too dear so he said he will get the sales guy to sharpen his pencil if I would give them another go. Next time I was needing some Stainless I asked for a price and sure enough they were a lot cheaper than before but they were still dearer than Richard Austins. To me you shouldn't have to keep trying to beat them down in price and it really grips my **** that you have to.

GA has been pretty good for me, them and Zurich seemed to be fair at renewal and not try and bump up the price massively and hope you would just pay without searching. The RAC were the worst, wife had a Celica and the first year they were cheap, next year it was tripled, safe to say they didn't get repeat business.

This is an infill frame for a banister rail at the top of a staircase landing, it will have toughened glass panels dropped into the slots, just made to someone else's sketch so I'm not really sure how it will be finished, nice little job to make though.

Drilled a hole each end then run a thin cutting disk along it, then file the ends square, the material is 50 x 30 so not much room to stroke a file, one of those jobs that need a bit of patience.
