There is a reason that you can't hire one without a chainsaw ticket.
Since when?

I don't know if it was something nationwide, but in a local hire place, my good mate was asked for one. (He had one). His chainsaw wasn't working and he needed one quick for a job. If that info isn't right. I stand corrected, thank you.Since when?
Speedy Hire used to insist on a ‘Chainsaw Licence’ which doesn’t exist.I don't know if it was something nationwide, but in a local hire place, my good mate was asked for one. (He had one). **** covering in the extreme.
That is why I have never purchased a petrol one I was always a bit scared. The law regarding chainsaws is stupid. You can go buy a saw without having any training or experience in using saws. These tools are dangerous, use them to fell a tree when you have had no training is mental. There are so many things to consider, some obvious, some not so obvious. I’m surprised HSE haven’t tried to stop the sale of saws to untrained people.
My girlfriend was horrified that since I was 8 I have used a chain saw with no training or Ppe what’s so ever or supervision. I’m not bragging or saying it’s right and now I actually have one I have all the very very good quality safety kit to go with it. But I still haven’t had any formal training and the ex forestry guy I did a job with and felled a whole load of trees with said I was very safe and could do things properly and he comes from way back in the good old days so I mean it’s down to how sensible you are and responsible you are as a person and weather or not you can engage your brain and use the common sense function that so many people lack. 100%. The industry is very self regulated as far as is possible through main dealers. Especially with top handled saws. The law regarding chainsaws is stupid. I'm afraid I don't agree on this...there is something to be said for being able to slice cleanly through a trunk at whatever angle you choose and have enough bar to do so. Particularly if you are professional and time is money. Sorry not trying to come across all disagreeable, just putting forward my opinionOnly if your an amateur or a American logger !
Iam very much the same. My father had a small forestry business and after school and weekends I used to cut and split logs for pocket money. Exactly there is plenty of stuff I don’t know but the key is to know you don’t know and know when to stop if you get my drift.Common sense does help but like you say not everyone has it. You sound very competent but there will be techniques and methods you won’t know.
Me and my pal next door use to go round decimating the local roddy population without any real permission and then flogging them to the old dears around the place as fire wood along with any fallen tree we could lay our mits on it was all rather questionable leagally.Iam very much the same. There is nothing in the law that stops hire shops hiring them out, it's those companies policies that do that, because they are not willing to give a hand over/training to the hirer in case they are sued by a numpty user. One tool I won't touch. Scares the poo out of me. loads of people buy one from Aldi/Lidl. But then forget the proper PPE. There is a reason that you can't hire one without a chainsaw ticket.
Not much use if someone is collecting but not the user
It was actually a surgeons tool to assist in child birthOddly enough festool claims to have invented what we think of as the modern day chain saw so what most people use for felling trees was originally intended to be used as a carpenters tool.
You’re right as far as the law goes. You can buy and use what you like. Within reason. You can purchase any chainsaw you want legally even a top handle saw, top handles are designed to be used in one hand (some of the time).
Some H&S seat polisher has deemed that Top Handle Saws are very dangerous and you need a special cert for them, all chainsaws are dangerous, even those little battery pruning ones, it depends totally on the person using it....
I knew a seller that wouldn't sell me top handle without a training certificate (as a private person for my own use, I don't need one even under H&S regs), but he would sell me a Husky 3120 with a 60 inch bar no problem.
From their perspective as a home user you’ve no business needing one therefore you’re unlikely to have been trained in using it and more importantly not using it. They are a different beast from a back handled one.

That’s why they wouldn’t sell you one I would think.
