I agree a top handle demands more respect than a standard one, but it's the same basic operation just in a different shape and location.

That sort of illustrates why you need the training.

Yup, agree with that. The ‘laws’ people come up with relating to H&S amaze me. What he meant was, it’s company policy, but to argue that it’s the law is just stupid

well I used the saw this evening to remove the holly tree next to the house it was ok!
I am not over the moon with it but I will make my mind up when I cut the oak logs up.
It seemed to snag on the really thin limbs on the holly say 1cm diameter, probably not really a chainsaw job 1cm stuff!

Do these engines need tunning from the factory?

Should cut 1cm stuff easy, try cutting from the bottom side of the wee branches. Shouldn’t need to be tuned but I dare say the odd one might

I will try the under side next time it seemed to splutter a bit when throttling up. there is a wee plastic bit that can be removed in the winter for more air but it wasnt that cold here today so I am sure it aint that

Do these engines need tunning from the factory?

If you bought it in a shop they would normally unbox it and run it up/give it a tweek, with mail order you are on your own.

Just a thought, you showed us those bottles of 2 stroke oil you were going to use but the Aspen fuel is pre-mixed! Did you mix more oil into the fuel?
Might be why it's spluttering.

no I used the Aspen as that 2 stroke oil didnt meet the specs waiting for my new 20L bottle to arrive I used the last of my 20L a month of so ago

Carburetor Adjustment Every unit is run at the factory and the carburetor is set in compliance with Emission Regulations. In addition, the carburetor is equipped with “H” (High Speed) and “L” (Low Speed) needle adjustment limiters that prevent settings outside acceptable limits. Engine Break-In New engines must be operated a minimum duration of two tanks of fuel break-in before carburetor adjustments can be made. During the break-in period your engine performance will increase and exhaust emissions will stabilize. Idle speed can be adjusted as required. High Altitude Operation This engine has been factory adjusted to maintain satisfactory starting, emission, and durability performance up to 1,100 feet above sea level (ASL) (96.0 kPa). To maintain proper engine operation and emission compliance above 1,100 feet ASL the carburetor may need to be adjusted by an authorized ECHO service dealer. If the engine is adjusted for operation above 1,100 feet ASL, the carburetor must be re-adjusted when operating the engine below 1,100 feet ASL, otherwise severe engine damage may result. 1. Before adjusting carburetor clean or replace air filter and muffler “Spark Arrestor Screen”. 2. Make sure the bar and chain are properly adjusted. 3. Start engine and run several minutes to bring to operating temperature. Flash choke twice during warm-up to clear any air from the fuel system. 4. Stop engine. Turn “H” speed needle counterclockwise (CCW) to stop. Turn “L” speed needle midway between full clockwise (CW) stop and CCW stop. 5. Idle Speed Adjustment: • Start engine, turn “Idle” speed adjustment screw “T” CW until the saw chain begins to move, then turn screw out CCW until the saw chain stops moving. Turn screw out, CCW, an additional 1/4 turn. When carburetor adjustment is completed, the saw chain should not move at idle, otherwise serious personal injury may result. 6. Accelerate to full throttle for 2 - 3 seconds to clear any excess fuel in the engine, then return to idle. Accelerate engine to full throttle to check for smooth transition from idle to high speed. If engine hesitates turn “L” needle CCW 1/8 turn and repeat acceleration. Continue adjustment until smooth acceleration results. 7. Check idle speed and reset if necessary as described in item 5. If a tachometer is available idle speed should be set to value listed on technical data page

I guess I need to wait a bit! 5 minutes removing the holly aint going break the engine in!

It will need running in for a while and will get better with use. The saw is only a 30cc, Stihl saws of that size come with a shorter bar and a narrower chain as standard, so it will make the saw work harder. On the thin stuff make sure the engine speed(therefore chain speed) is up before trying to cut the wood it will grab the wood if the chain speed is to low.

Yes I had to fit the bar and chain. I may need to tighten the tension a bit more on the chain

It could be a tad to tight or new, possibly.

I agree it will need running in, 3 tanks of fuel to loosen up, 8/10-ish tanks to be fully run in.

On a small saw with a new/sharp chain, full throttle then into the cut with light pulling pressure on the back handle and let the saw set the speed of cut, its a feel thing with small saws.
Then once your used to that, swap the homeowner chain out and learn again...

Can't remember who told me or where I saw it but I set the chain tension such that (when cold) you can just see daylight under three of the drive links.

So far on the 20" bar on the 562XP that had worked well.
