Hi Myles - just found your thread. Awesome stuff! I have a '79 TK 500 horse truck that is going to need a serious birthday starting next year. Would be great to pick your brains re parts suppliers and resources. Am in NZ too - about an hr north of Auckland. Where are you?

North Canterbury so a bit of a drive but great to hear from you. I'm pretty much discovering stuff as I go along and this forum gives some real experts looking over your shoulder; it's great.

Yours didn't used to be yellow did it Myles? I saw a TK in Christchurch a few years back that I photographed as they're not that common. In my photos it's yellow but Carjam.co.nz is telling me it's blue, so must have had a repaint

It's been blue as long as I've had it. I fetched in down from Cambridge in around 2005, also a horsebox. We went all over the place with kids and ponies, it was fun; then we bought something posher and it sat up the back for a few years. Current plan is a house truck, initially with the old box put back on and cleaned up a bit, then something purpose made later.

Christchurch is a dream for anyone doing a car/truck restoration - every possible engineering service within 15 mins drive of work and many within walking distance.
On Saturday afternoon I dropped the throttle linkage parts to the sandblasters. Monday morning at 0800 he phoned to say the blasting was done and he had dropped them off at the platers. At 0845 the platers called to say the parts were ready to collect! $30 to do a selection of shafts and brackets in bright zinc.
Pretty good service that!

Palmerston North is good too, there's a whole strip of light industry, automotive specialists, modification shops before the airport. The weirdest thing there is the 24/7 car and dog wash, obviously for when you just *have* to wash your dog at 3am...

I'm repairing a few dents on the panels prior to paint...
and there are places where I have rubbed through the primer and have bare metal showing. So what is the procedure?
Do I need the 'right' bare metal primer or will anything out of a can do? Do I need to prime the whole panel? Do I need a primer/surfacer as well?
Is it important about mixing paint types these days?

Some time ago I was told the only way to do a proper job and get a good result, was to go to a trusted local paint suppliers and get the lot from them. They know their own products and what reacts with what. Perhaps they'll be more expensive, but worth it.
Sounds excellent advice in theory, but in practice they were horrendously expensive. Obviously I had hoped to hear 'nah mate mix up this stuff it's dead cheap'!
I also found that only one employee was the paint genious. The rest of the staff knew nothing other than till operation. Most customers walk out happy as they already know what to ask for. When things do go wrong, you have just lost more money in wasted products and the products to rectify it aren't thrown in free either. The advice they can give is limited by your description of the problem and their understanding of it as they aren't going to pop round and have a look.
Most bodyshops aren't needing the job to last forever (so going to a bodyshop for tips is a good idea but I wouldn't listen too strongly to their anti corrosion advice) and most retailers don't know what to offer outside of this circle.
Best UK website I have used is www.rust.co.uk
The chap on the phone is great. He will sell you the right stuff. Now I am not known for my generosity and some (all!!) of the stuff is expensive but everything he sells, you can Google and read glowing reviews on. A mate of mine used his 'stand alone' primer that is meant to be so good it will survive without a top coat, (hence the name) on his car he keeps for winter use. Car was top coated in cheap paint 10 years ago and is still excellent. I probably spent £100 quid with him that I didn't want to part with. Worth every penny!
When I broke through to bare metal I used an acid etch primer from a spray can called acid8. made by upol. I believe you can give a quick spritz of this and paint straight on. I was also told if you rub through again the acid remains in the metal leaving it's protection. That bit I don't believe or trust but then if I'd got it off the rust guy maybe I would.
