I use one every day, it's amazing the junk it flushes out.
I only have one cavity and it was from my teen years.

I used one for years. Even after the best tooth brushing it was amazing how much extra goop would come out with the water pik.
For some reason I stopped using it, can't remember why now. Might be an idea to get another.

From what I read there's two ends of the scale in the US, the near toothless like Cletus from The Simpsons and those who can afford decent health insurance.

There was a holiday in the sun type programme, in some place they paint cocks on the houses.
It showed a woman having a toothache cured, they stuffed her mouth with wet yak dung and poked
a red hot poker into the tooth. She smiled afterwards, toothache gone!

America Hollywood has this obsession with snowy white, perfectly symmetrical rows of immaculate even teeth. It can only be the result of a shedload of $$$ being spent, as very few people are lucky enough to be born that way.

Most Americans I've worked with have teeth as normal as most Brits. Dental insurance isn't cheap in the US, nor is medical insurance, so the average working man doesn't have the immaculate pearlies.

My daughter lives in the states and a month ago had a 6 hour stay in hospital for "women's problems" discharged the same day after an examination and now has a 10,000 Dollar bill/invoice sitting in the kitchen drawer she started a new teacher's assistant job 2 weeks later with full insurance but must pay the hospital bills from her new job.

I use inter-dens brushes as I can't use dental floss due to close-fitting teeth - some with no gaps between them.

Same here, however, you would be surprised what that leetle power washer (the water pik) can do.
That stuff you get in the front teeth from eating corn on the cob ?

The "silly study" just happens to be one I think, all on the same lines. It was meant to be informative.

Just back from my dentist. Had an old amalgam filling taken out and a "nano" composite filling done. An American system called Bioclear made by 3M. The results are truly amazing! Sat watching all about it on YouTube now.

My dentist has used a jet wash for some years, though I don't think it's as effective as the picks used to be it's probably much more difficult to do any damage than it would be with the picks. He didn't use the jet wash on them today, and I was happy about that because at this time of year, the water jet is always freezing cold and while my teeth aren't particularly sensitive, that jet certainly finds the bits that are. I just had the dremel with the sanding disc today.

I have used a water pik for some time. It is indeed worrying how much unidentified gunk it sometimes dislodges.
The Ultimate Authority also uses it like a mini pressure washer to clean around the plug hole and tap of the handbasin. The power lead and hose combined won't reach beyond the handbasin so I'm not too worried - yet.

Last time my dentist did the tooth cleaning thing I asked about the 'pik' as there was no water. She said it was an ultrasonic probe and demonstrated it against the heel of my hand. Interesting.

When I was going there as a kid, I used to make white metal model kits and I thought the little drill thing mine had back then would be really useful for that. It was a box on wheels, with a flexible drive on some sort of reel inside that pulled out, and he could swap around between grinding wheel, drill and presumably all sorts of other stuff. Pedal driven, too.

My manager offshore is a yank, he had a root canal done on company health insurance and somehow he was accidentally sent a copy of the bill, that should have gone directly to the insurance provider.

$11,000 for a basic root canal.

Health and its insurance is one of the biggest money making scams in the US today. Being a non American I had supplemental cover by my employer, $100 a month I paid, full cover, for me and my family, but my American coworkers paid full price, $1000 a month for the same cover.

My Dentist drives a Porsche - he has had buckets of money off me and wifey over the last two decades. There is no warranty for his work - if a crown falls off - you pay again - if it still hurts you pay again. You just pay... And yes he knows how to charge.

The most common profession amongst private pilots, when I was knocking around flying clubs, was dentist.

Lost a crown 6 weeks ago (pulled it off and then broke it in half)...then I broke a filling last week.

Am avoiding the dentist...in London I think that'll cost be the thick end of £1k easily .

I have a large gap in the middle top of mush, It started when i was about 16 with a filling in front tooth, every year the filling would fall out & get bigger, in the end it got infected & a root canal was done followed by a crown cap. That lasted about 20 years & fell off, another infection meant an operation followed by a post crown. That lasted until about 6 years ago when a spanner slipped of a nut & snapped the bugger off. I got a plate with one toothy peg on it. I hate the poxy thing but without it look like one of the hillbillies out of deliverance.
Saw the dentist the other day as i had a gumboil just above that missing tooth, that went of its own accord but is likely to return. I asked what the options are.
It seems Im out of options, the root is dead & cant be crowned now. Im in the position of keep as is, A bridge off the crown each side which isnt a good idea or an implant. Implant is going to be 2.5 to 3 k! But the specialist in the practice will need to look at it first to see if the bone is good enough to take it.
I have been told by several dentists that It might sound good to go abroad for cheap treatment but if & when it goes wrong you are in trouble.
One of these guys was a member of another forum & said an increasing amount of his work was trying to put right foreign done implants that had failed.
Try fixing those on the nhs!
As for DIY dentistry a scrap dealer mate pulls his own teeth on occasion, he has some forceps that he got in the scrap years ago & uses those!
