the industry does know wood stoves are going to be hit so why have a stove scrapage scheme note i havent looked for ones in other stores so dont know if it exists or not with them

do you think thats fair or have you been robbed both by defra and the wood stove companys that said it was fine to buy old stock wood stoves

Yes Ok, I even read the whole defra thing - a bit light on the ecodesign specifications and standards for authorising "allowed" burners. Sorry, it's good to have a heads up on future legislation, but we need to be sensible here.

The particulates are awful - so is the ash. I suspect the woodburner is not doing my health any favours at all.
And they really make no sense economically unless you get free wood.
My mate runs a pallet making business - I get loads of free wood. He doesn't have a wood burner and has no desire to ever have one! With gas at 2.5p per kw I don't blame him - he has enough of cutting up pallets all day as it is!

wood is carbon neutral, and, very frequently, a waste product (as in not just pallet wood but that the trees are often cut down for an entirely different reason than to log for fire wood)

gas and oil certainly are not carbon neutral, nor are a waste product

IPPC or whatever they're called have codes. You will find that the vast majority of pallets are stamped HT, which is entirely safe to burn.

The blue ones etc are under private ownership anyway.

Rather more referring to building wood offcuts but yea some pallets too. I'm not here to wag a finger and tutt, just say look it up and make your own minds.

Clearview, British made and does what it says, glass stays clean, frugal on fuel.
Second hand is worth getting as all parts available.
Glass, rope,glue,firebricks, shroud and a can of paint for about £200, be good for another 15 years and look brand new.

Yeah, I get where you're coming from there. Personally I burn mine of an evening, flat out till it glows and then back off a little. Cold weather feet up luxury if you like.
But, old and uncertified needn't mean bad...

Efficient wood burners are no problem. With secondary combustion you don't really get any particulates. And the chimney stays clean for a long time. In 7 years we've had the sweeper over once and he said the chimney was so clean it barely needed sweeping.

Now we have a proper masonry heater too, not a metal stove.

BTW: I have read old technical magazines and the swedes where making woodfired kitchen stoves in the late 30s with secondary combustion of flue gasses and very high efficiencies. I guess this technology did not have much chance to propagate as it got replaced by gas and electricity. It's been my experience most wood stoves until recently where stuck on an earlier stage of development and did not incorporate these things the swedes already knew in the 1930s (of course the swedes also forgot).

I wanna show something, these are just some simple steel plates that go in a sauna heater. They add secondary combustion and reduce the pollution so it can meet the german emissions requirements which the company I work for needs in order to sell there. The principle is very simple, they lie on the side of the firebox and create an air gap on the sides with an outlet on the top.

This allows for air to be drawn up through the sides of the fire without being consumed by it, and fresh air gets to mix with the flue gasses and burn again. I don't really see why most heaters could not be modified in a similar way... you lose some volume for firewood, but you get it back by getting a lot more heat out of a smaller amount of firewood plus less pollution.

the reference is simple bring the grate air higher to create secondary air input into the stove a great idea

cost saving on many stoves out there however id like to fix mine into the fire brick sides for a much better seal

just to note here your looking for a drilled holed plate at rear of the stove or a baffle plate tubes at the top of the stove below the baffle plate

beaware of dirty jargon claiming secondary air is from the front via the glass air wash system

Incidentally we will really only be using it in the winter and a few weeks either side as we have Gas CH too.

We're going to look at some stoves tomorrow, had a guy come yesterday (older boy from Bywaters in Chapel En Le Frith if anyone knows it.

He recommended these: ACR Malvern

Apparently are designed and built in the UK, have all the certifications for the 2022 stuff, airwash, secondary air, Steel with Cast door.

Anyone heard / recommend them?

The way you or I burn it yes.
The fact that large areas of virgin forest are being cleared for biomass power stations makes my blood boil.
Millions of trees in the UK that shouldn't have been cut down are these days as they know they can make a killing out of selling the wood.
Very sore point for me at the moment as I am trying to save 9 ash trees on my land that the councils are forcing to be cut down. I am going to post another thread on it actually.

just to note you have been given a load of codswallop

ive illustrated in the above pics if you really want to use a better wood stove ive laso linked you to proper secondary air stoves in the vids above

it uses only primary air under the stove and an airwash that they called secondary air it would need a further airwash called territory air to be a fully air washed system

this is the big con going on with stove companys any old type stove can be still sold

It will be illegal to manufacture and sell new stoves after 1st January 2022 that do not comply with the Ecodesign requirements. However, stoves that are already in the supply chain (manufacturers’, distributors’, retailers’ warehouses or retailers’ showrooms) can be sold after this date. An Ecodesign Enforcement Team has been set up within the National Measurement Office to verify that products sold comply with the regulations.

Why do you need a wood burner if you have gas central heating? Gas is the cheapest form of heating you will ever get. Gas is 2.5p per kwh. Electric is 17p.
Woodburners are pretty and if you get free wood it is well worth doing.
If you plan on buying wood seriously it is a waste of money unless you can find someone selling wood at a decent price.
