That is all do able at the momentA couple of things I would make different.
1. I would have the edge that is facing you come out as far as possible, in other words just inside the edge of the tray.
2. I would cut away the front so that it is not obscuring the chuck.

A inch down the spindle ain't bad at all mine is a bit less.than thatDepends on your point of view.
You can pass bigger stock through your headstock.
Consider myself lucky.
Spindle takes collets directly giving me full bedway
