The camera jokes are getting very boring now and I am sure others as well as myself are getting sick of them cluttering threads.

Mee does not do photo's, accept it and move on, it's not ideal on a forum but that's life, if it annoys you them add him to your block list.

Someone needed a tool for removing the timing belt idlers on a ducati, so I offered to make one for him. Bit of an odd shape with 10mm flats but a 12.4mm radius on the ends, so I had to cut the slot then make a tool to broach out the shape in my press.

Machined a broach cutter from EN8

Hardened with gas torch and dunking in water, then ground the face and a bit of relief on the sides

Milled the basic shape from EN8 again

Shoved the broach up it with my press

As you can see the corners curled out nicely to give me the perfect shape

Cleaned up an old socket in the lathe and put a healthy bevel in the end for welding. I went round once without filler to get some penetration then again over the top with filler to allow some clean-up.

Finished tool, alongside the cutter.

Interesting. I've been looking at rotary broaches for making up square/hex holes. Wonder if I really need one since I already have a decent flypress pride of place in the workshop.

I would probably want to chop out that swarf before it went anywhere near the inside of an engine though...

Unless you want bright colours don't paint them.
Either let them rust, or coat with acid. Citric or vinegar, let rust and you will get a wounderful rust finish.
Seal with wax or varnish.




This was brushed with out of code tomato ketchup., on the shoes.

This guy was wire brushed clean, brushed with vinegar. Cooked dry in a open fire. Then brushed with bee's wax.

Just my views on how I finish horseshoe work.

I like the rust look too but this is for my mum and I think she would like the bling of bright colours, maybe red and black or orange or yellow we will see.

Sorry the daisy has fallen over. But a tip, don't make the colours you paint "Scream". But reds, purples, a bit of white. The green needs to hide.
I am sure you will get it right.

Oh well then. it will rust in patches.
The acid from the horse shoes, unless 100% cleaned out will leach through.
You will get a good effect, just takes longer.

I'd really better not, my better half already accuses me of having resting smug face as it is. Somewhat similar to resting female dog face but I am informed it is a good deal more annoying!
