I made a big dial for my South Bend. Gotta stamp the numbers on it tomorrow then I'll do a full write-up.

I see the calibration marks look identical, so how is it actually calibrated now? If it were 0.001” per graduation before, I might be 0.0005” with the double diameter dial?

The small dial has 100 divisions, the new one has 200. The screw pitch is the same so the new dial is a diameter-reading dial instead of a radius-reading one. What you read on the dial is the actual amount you take off the diameter.

But how bad a buckle would you need to knock the brake blocks back or are you saying it's bent so the brake blocks have nothing to run on? Is that even a wheel by that stage?
You might have bigger problems but I can see how a completely independent braking system (well almost) would be useful.

Just a little bit of a side to side wobble in the rim is enough to make rim brakes less effective. Rim brakes also need more clearance so more travel so less force applied to the rim for the same lever stroke compared to a disc rotor. They deal with water much better too.

Nice work. Made a similar one for my lathe, direct reading, so one thou on the dial takes one thou off the work, best cure for brain ache I ever made!

It’s for a gambler Western reenactment character. The scenario is a ‘hidden’ gun that a gambler will lift his jacket slightly, to reveal a fancy holster and weaponry, if things get ‘heavy’, or accusations of cheating fly.

In passing, I might mention the brakes are still rim brakes, but as good as I can go with them. No problems have arisen in their use. If the forks had a disc fixing point, I would probably have used it.

You can make a lug to bolt a disc brake caliper onto and with care you can weld it onto a pair of forks, the hardest part is keeping it all aligned as you weld. If you don't fancy welding to your forks then you could make a sleeve that clamps on the fork leg with a mount for the caliper on that. Mind you it would be easy enough and cheap enough just to swop the fork for one with a disc mount already on it.

@Wendelspanswick at the very least I'd convert that to V-brake rather than the standard caliper you've got on there.

But once you've tried disc you will never go back, discs will out brake rims all day long come rain, shine, mud, buckled wheels etc etc,

Magura did do a hydraulic rim brake that was about as good as rim brakes got but they are still not a patch on disc brakes.

Many years ago Hope did a clamp on disc brake conversion kit, I know as I have that on the rear of my old mountain bike, I've had it from back in the day and they were like hen's teeth back then so virtually no chance of finding one nowadays.

I think they still do make them, I've got them on my trials bike and they're excellent when they're working (Second hand, water-bled. )
I'd say about as much stopping power as a disc but missing a bit of the control. The upside is there's no disc to smash up when you don't quite hop far, it's not fun dragging a bike home because the disc is fouling on the caliper, ask me how I know.

It does have Shimano cantilever brakes as standard, a couple of the little plastic spring holders with the screw adjuster are cracked so a perfect project for the 3d printer.

Set up well on a 20" trials bike I preferred them. Didn't get the rocking through disk movement.

Today was a fine day, no wind at all, so I got on with raising/capping the gunwale and welding on the bait box.

Pics are not great as the sun was just at the wrong angle.

Also got the previously made stanchions bolted on and then the stainless pipe welded to them and fixed either end.

Then just before I came home I cut out the nylon rope keeper for the hauler.
