They have decided weathering is nonsense these days . Heat treatment is the way.
I ll rough mill , heat treat surface grind then scrape
Ringing does work and make it move though I’ve found you can ring again and it will move again.
I reckon it’s similar to a car bonnet pinging on its axis

Not made but stripped, cleaned and new diodes fitted. The new diodes were only 12mm thread (in an existing 20mm hole) so I made some top hat type nuts by cutting the heads and shoulders off some 20mm bolts and drilled and tapped a 12mm thread in them for a good solid fit.

I modified and old pair of pliers to cut a small slot in some cardboard.

first of all some old pliers were annealed

then a slot was cut in the jaws using a slitting saw (got to say the three phase motor and vfd was used to give about 100rpm rather than the 365rpm with a single phase motor)

a punch was then cut/ground from a stanley knife blade

this was then tacked into the slot using a tig welder and then clearance was milled onto the slot that now was the die to go with the punch

and the final product basically the museum I volunteer at need thin slots cutting around the edge of beermats so they can demonstrate braiding to school visits

cutting a slot with scissors wont work there has to be a small gap between the sides of the slot as it needs to be able to grip thread. normally there would only be 8 slots cut each card

Mad few days, but I did get some time in my play pen.

Old Soldering iron. I was told when I brought it, that it was for display only. The vender had not tested it. Fair enough.


2 Pin Bakelite plug, cloth coated rubber cable, oh yes it had seen better days.


The test with the AVO showed all seamed to be in good order. So it was re-wired in 3 core, the earth circuit being made through the body.



Granddads Yorkshire flux, the tin long since rusted out. It is a good way to clean a old copper tip, before applying new solder to tin the bit again.



The handle was cleaned and waxed up again. Not the most comfortable handle, I may turn a new one up, one day in the future.

6lb of wooden Compass plane. I had high hopes for this. But Mother Nature had plans.




It cracked. You see here me opening the crack up to get glue in.

It was glued up, the glue takes time cure. So using 1mm mig wire, I rough up the coating with 4oo grit paper, drill the holes in the body. The wire is coated in glue, driven in. The receiving holes are blind and as you drive the wire in, the head will "Mushroom" and lock them self's in.

Then you use "Meths." and wire wool to clean the body, after the surplus glue is removed. You are not after a spotless finish, but you move the dirt around and hide the repair.




The Blade and the cap were good steel, took a edge very well.




Not varnish, or oil or wax. This shine was done using a hard steel edge, holding it like a cabinet scraper you buff the wood smooth and it shines. Then you wax and oil.




Finished. Yes it is stained. With the original dirt and a wash with a caffeine Free tea .

The surface, apart from the sole is waxed, the sole left burnished.

Some pieces I knocked up for a future project.
Yes they are impact sockets, I had to resort to using them to hold some l/h thread nuts after not being able to find a l/h connector nut similar to the other r/h's in the picture.
I did try welding 3 ordinary l/h thread nuts together to make a connector nut, won't be doing it again, took ages to get my threaded rod back

Little project to replicate & replace mild steel exhaust caps for 80's GPZs
After some prototypes we were ready for a production run, clever bit was drawing up and designing the press tooling by my mate who's a design engineer.
All stainless, 80mm L x 38mm reducing to 31.8 tubing, 120mm laser cut flat discs, dished & cupped to 100mm, pressed in and tig tacked.

Hydraulic press, fly press, press drill, mig, lathe fettling the tooling, deburring etc etc.
All pretty manual & a lot of separate processes, It took 3 of us nearly a day to make 34 = 17 pairs
Puts it in perspective for me now when people say "can you knock me up one of those for a few quid"....

I was asked by a farmer if I could make an attachment today for a mole plough to go on the ripper linkage on their Komatsu. The plate is 25mm and 20mm road plate. He gave me the drawing of what he wanted making and now he is a happy Chappy making motorways for moles to scurry up and down

On a smaller scale, I was playing with the lathe today.

Made an adapter for a microphone boom that I’m going to use as a camera stand.

I also made the thing in the picture out of mild steel. In theory, once I’ve drilled it for a set screw, I will be able to put a die in it, level it using a centre in the tailstock, and thread whatever is in the chuck. There is a hole to put a small crossbar, if needed. Good fun using a boring bar.

Decided to make it after making a mess of the first adapter trying to thread it while holding it in a vise. Did I get upset? No, I turned another adapter and did it right.

Interested to see if I have made the right choice in using steel, not aluminium.

I got this foot pump a few weeks ago. It was complete and it worked.

Yes I know in that image it is upside down.

So, not much to do. So I took it to bits. Mainly to clean up. it is all brass. The main outer tube is brass, but tin plated.It cleaned up with wire wool and toothpaste. I left the "Crazy pattern" on it. For the simple reason I liked it.

The leather washer was removed and I made a new one from 3 layers of 3mm leather. All it is is 2 larger flat bits a bit bigger than the main tube diameter. The middle one a fraction smaller, but allows the bigger ones to flex and seal the tube.

The Bakelite handle, the bottom black bit was cleaned with plastic polish and re fitted.

The only difficult part was were the bar and washer fits into the out tube, there was some damaged to the threads. This took a bit of work with a rifer file to sort.



Not a complicated re-build, but a fun one. For one simple but important reason. I spent a few happy hours with Mini Me.

My wife wanted a fancy thing for supporting peony’s in the garden. This is how it turned out. I’ve made 5 foot high obelisks before, but this is a dinky version. Small mug for scale!

Not making as such; repairing. A colleague's daughter's bed started to fail - legs are just 1mm thick, 30mm OD tubes that slide into each other with a few spotwelds...

Never been as low as 30A before and I'm certainly glad I had some 1mm filler rods! Lots of stopping and starting as I could only manage

perhaps thirty degrees at a time. Not the prettiest in places!

Got back earlier than I thought today so did a bit more work to the lathe. The Oldham coupling had been smashed up, it was meant to be a weak link and so far in my retrofit trials and tribulations it has done its job twice. No more inserts left though so into the lathe with a piece of 50mm Dia Acetal, turn down to 60mm and part 3 sections off. Into the Chiron and cut a 10.4mm wide slot, turn over and cut the other slot at 90 degrees.

Now I have 2 spares, wonder how long they will last
