Starting to get a better hang of uphill vertical stick welding , 2.5mm 6013 rods running about 80A I think just on my rather thick test box section I practise on.

I realised as I take on bigger projects I cant easily move the work around to make a easy flat weld so teaching myself more positions

Slag was very easy to remove , just a swipe with glove and comes off all in one

Compared to the pro's on here might be a bit low quality but I'm really pleased with it compared to the porosity ridden bird dirt I first did vertical

Ive had an aldi bandsaw quite a long time today the vice mofifications made their way to top of the list.
M20 threaded rod, turned down ends and tapped one m12, then a 26x6 washer for the jaw to sit against. Turned a nyloc nut into a normal nut.

That was definalty 6013 , However I do want to try 7018 now my welder can run it

Finally,after months,got this finished,it goes with the bridge,previously featured on these very pages.
The 3 castings,on each column are aluminium,made in Derbyshire were £1200+vat,that was in March.
Oh,and remember the distortions from the galvanisers,this is post straightened.All etched and painted now.

Good observation,it’s 800/350mm aluminium cast panels,with 12mm squares perforating thru,UK made,and expensive.

Just my contribution. After many interruptions and site visits, there has been some more progress on the pontoons

The second one is now completely welded outside with the chines dressed, ready for turning over and welding on the deck and alli angle to attach the top frame to. Plan to have this all completed and delivered this week as some playground equipment is required. Might even get to start the hood for the fume extraction and get that fitted as it is greatly required, especially cutting steel and stainless steel.

It’s just messy come clean out time.
I use a magnet wand every time I use the table to clear out the big dross, then when I drain down just scoop out the rest with a plastic scoop thing from your local farm shop/equestrian suppliers.

I recently restored and converted a Storm lantern into a electric storm lantern.
Due to bad rust. But also the wick head had failed.

I knew I had one, but couldn't find it.
I did today, when looking for my box of BA nuts and bolts.

Hmm, not pretty, also not moving. Plus no wick.

So, place in pan of hot water, caustic soda and pumice powder.

After 20 minutes, remove and carefully rub with wire wool, then let simmer in water for 20 mins.

So add a wick.

It’s just messy come clean out time.

Magnet wouldn't work for me as it is Alu or Stainless mainly but not found it to be that bad. I have drained it twice since I got it up and running and not had that much to clean out. I have a tank below mine so I can drain to the tank then pump back in which makes life easy. Also fitted a secondary drain valve so I can empty the table to tank, close that valve and open another then I can hose the table down into a drum to wash out the dross. Once settled I drain off the water in the drum and I am left with the dross.

Nickk I hope you see this as a positive criticism but those balustrades do not look toddler-safe from what I can see.

Rolled the first cap stone out onto a pallet, protecting the edge with an old towel:

Two edges have imperfections:

The finished surface has a few pinholes close up. I'm a tad concerned, over time, of those being a bit of a "key" for frost action. I was going to just install this atop the brick pillar and paint with Thompson's Water Seal. Veering now towards filling those imperfections and just painting with a decent, black masonry paint. On the basis the paint will fill the pinholes. Also, if it does flake off it won't look too bad as the substrate is the dyed grey colour anyway.

For a first attempt I'm pretty happy with that. OMG is it heavy though!

Guessing a dry'ish mortar bed to lay this on?
