That heater, there is a thermal cutout in them, might be a resettable one or it'll be a thermal link poked into a hole on the boiler , they melt if it's been run without water to protect the element.
The element can be tested, measure from the spade connector points to earth, it should be clear/high ohms, then measure across the two elements tabs you should get about 25 ohms on a good one.

Heater element good, the small wheel temp control is fully working.
Heats up water a treat, well the water what stays in.
The out let pipe leaks like a good one.
Could be the hard water deposits, I will take a deeper look soon.

Those heaters always drip from the outlet as they heat up due to the expansion of the water, they vent through the outlet.

But, it was free, I have a copper tank. Heater and stuff. it will live again.

The fitting were the out let live sin is cracked and caked in hard water deposit.

I acquired this a few weeks ago as a scrap / parts saw from distant family member who had managed to kill it but it's only today that I managed to do something with it...

I was told it might have been fed straight petrol instead of 2 stroke mix which caused it to burn up - I'm not so certain but in any case the piston and cylinder were completely shot and the saw deemed beyond economical repair (which it would be with genuine Stihl parts). I gambled on a replacement Chinese cylinder / piston / crank assembly off Ebay for £30 and after an hours work to swap it over it ran... albeit poorly due to fuel starvation (IMO this was the cause of it burning up as it was running very lean).

A further hours work fitting a £3 carb rebuild kit (including making a couple of crude Welch plug punches) and £9 genuine Stihl fuel line and filter (I avoid pattern fuel lines at all costs) and the saw runs and cuts (after a decent sharpening) like new. Ignoring the time spent on it I suppose I acquired a £180ish (new) saw for £42. I'm not sure I would have bothered buying an ms170 for that if I had the chance as I've used this model quite a bit in the past (including the very saw above on a few occasions) and although they work well for their intended purpose I've never been that impressed with their build quality but still there's a certain satisfaction in working on saws and putting scrap back to work.

How even the Chinese can make a working direct bolt on replacement for the above for £30 is beyond me.

Went out in Barnstaple today to have a coffee with an old client and came away with a big sack of EN1A round and hex bar of various diameters and length's.

He makes these for a living, got a bag full of various fittings too
