Part 2 of the installment
I finished off the fly cutter last night.





I got this lathe tool that uses the "blunt" corners of CNMG inserts. I thought the approach and relief angles could work really well for fly cutting, and if nothing else, I could grind my own carbide edges out of used-up inserts. If the relief wasn't enough to avoid recutting chips, then I have some brazed carbide that I could grind to suit.
I put one of my random ceratip inserts that I don't know what they are for. (The box says steel, but they don't work on steel worth anything). I tried it out-of-the-box, and I also tried it after giving the edge a little tickle with a grinder.



My first couple of cuts were way too fast, it left a nasty smeared surface. I slowed the spindle right down to around 250rpm and about 30mm/min feed which worked much better.
This was a 1 thou cut (I did several at different speeds/feeds). The pictures don't do the finish justice. I couldn't clean it properly, but trust me, this is almost mirror finish. Really happy




Just need some grub screws to replace the bolts I used for testing... and to get some more materials to try out... need to learn these things before a job comes in that has to be perfect... I'll try it on steel as well and see how rigid the setup is.

The nose was threaded. Left hand thread. And not been removed in 60 years

You'd have thought a hole or 2 for a pin spanner would have been sensible/helpful!

Yep. And maybe an LH stamp or something.

I guess they didn't think these mills would still be running in 60+ years time.

I mean the manual is 10 pages more or less with no diagrams or parts lists. Maybe a service manual existed but they certainly wouldn't be widely available.

No, back in the day they’d have the makers version of Clive @pressbrake1 in to service it, if needed.

All back together just waiting for the spindle to cool down.

Heated the lower bearing on the hot plate and froze the spindle. Slide together easy. Then heated the top bearing onto the spindle. Now waiting to cool before preloading,

Well something isn't right. Not sure if it's these dubious bearings or something hasn't gone back together right because I've got either a tonne of play or a really tight spindle, nothing inbetween.

Like an idiot I've put the whole lot back in the machine which is probably the best part of two hours work messing about trying to reconnect the poxy chain.

I assume you have a screwed collar acting on the top bearing inner race for preload adjustment? Why heat the top bearing to get it to go on? Surely it will be a sliding fit to allow for preload adjustment?

I would have thought that at least one bearing would need to move slightly freely to allow adjustment, a nice tight sliding fit. If you had to heat things up to assemble, something is wrong
