Just edited my original post as i have just seen i put 2 & 3 not 2 & 4, Do you have a smaller pulley to fit so you can get the speed down a little?
I did have a handy chart detailing motor speeds and pulley diameters to reduce and increase will have to see if i can still find it.

Ah that be great. As I need to reduce the rpm by 460 rpm. Depending on the original pulley size. But if you have a chart that be awesome.

Mine has the original motor, it has a huge imposing presence in comparison to Spence's one.

I reckon it weighs around 50 kg, not sure about electric motors but I think the rotating mass would give it plenty of tourque compared to a modern lightweight one, and a shaper needs tourque!

Yes I understand what you mean. I not clued up on electrics but my new single phase motor is 1.5 5hp. Not sure on the torque power.

Measure the pulleys, it's a simple ratio.

1000rpm motor
10cm motor pulley
20cm driven pulley
= 500rpm output

or

(rpm x motor pulley) / driven pulley = output speed.

You can measure the pulleys in inches, cm, mm, squirrels, whatever - just so long as you use consistent units.

(Round figures for illustration).

Hopefully this link works the pdf gives you the shaft speed of a 200mm pulley from varying diameter motor pulleys from 50mm to 190mm for both 6 pole and 4 pole motors this will give you a rough idea of the diameter you need to put on the 4 pole on the motor to get back to a speed close to the 6 pole.

I can do maths but only to a point. I unfortunately didn't learn a great deal at boarding school.

After a clean up and a study. There is a good amount of material to fix the problem. Will take the gear to my local machine shop and get the tops milled down .and make some bolt in plates like the picture below.

Thanks atconut. Appreciate it. But it's ok. Hopefully this year a mill and a few other machines and then I can do this kind of work.

You could do that in a lathe.

Or, it'd be an ideal job for a shaper

Hahaha. Yes indeed. Lathe is waiting for me to fit the new motor and make a new tool Post. You need a machine to fix a machine for the machine ya working on.

Made a crude hub/pulley puller. And it worked good considering it was made of bits I had kicking around. Got the pulley of with no damage. A new set of bearings is in order as they do feel a bit crud.

Ok guys. Now I think I have this right.
Original shaper motor. 6 pole. 3 phase. 0.75 hp. 3.35 lbs torque . 940 rpm.

New motor. 4 pole single phase. 1.5 hp.
5.49 lbs torque. 1400 rpm. So if my calculations are correct. Should be good to go.

Dunno how many poles cos I can't find my pics of the rotor, but this is after I fixed all the old softened insulation with heat shrink on my original motor..

But that says nothing about what speed the head will be running.

If you put the new motor on with the original pulleys then the head will be running at approx 1.5 times the speed it should.

I understand that the pulley speed needs reducing. I was more concerned about if the new motor would be suitable as it's 4 pole and not 6.

that's only speed difference. your up on hp with new motor as well

You will also increase the torque of the new motor due to the reduction gearing so all will be fine

I should probably clarify, the actual motors torque will not be increased but the torque seen by the shaper will be as you are reducing the gearing further than original.

That's complicated by being a two step pulley and the min radius the v belt will reliably operate at, it's close to min as it is me thinks.
