Standard built-in ladder for the chimney sweep, I think all houses have them

I think it would be very usefull but you wouldnt catch a chimney sweep on the roof in the UK they do it all from the fire place, doubt they could even get insurance without jumping through loads of health and safety stuff!

Our sweep has been up on the roof a few times to check on the chimney pot etc.. Always has ladders on his van.

Loads of sweeping in Scotland is done from the roof down
due to the length of the lums in the Tenements.

Bought the sheet metal for the roof last night. Will arrive next week. Standard corrugate profile like this:

Also got condensation fabric but I got that straight away. I am putting it up this weekend, or so is the plan. I am ripping 25mm thick strips from 2x4s on my bandsaw and I will use that to nail the condensation fabric to the rafters. I was going to skip that step but decided not to. Then I am putting up the purlins on top of that and it should be ready for the sheet metal.

OK I am working of the roof now. Been having rain on and off recently and one incredible downpour. Really puts a crimp in working outdoors. I think I can put another purlin on this side then I will switch to working from the other side until it's equally completed, then I lay down the final piece of condensation plastic over the ridge and finish it.

The material I have is not long enough to make one single purlin and the first attempt I made to extend it was kinda clumsly, so instead I decided to use my pantorouter, once set up it's quite fast to make a box joint, with polyurethane glue that should be stronger than the wood. One thing to keep in mind is try and get the joints at different places.

It is a fantastically flexible machine, the tricky part is figuring out the templates, which all gotta be scaled 2x (but its also good because all errors are reduced 2x in the piece you work on)

Also I changed my mind and went out and put up the plastic over the ridge as well and screwed it down on one side, I'll leave it loose on the other side until I approach it from the other side. Now I have more than half the shed under cover from rain though which is good.

just leave it down and overlap with your next piece as well that means your ridge is double protected not to leak there

just try and get the frame as water tight as quick as possible

Bit long of a day last night, get up 5:50, work an hour longer untill 1700, go pick up a chest of drawers my fiance bought 2nd hand, get home around 1800 and eat quickly, then work until 2100 to get the final plastic on the roof before it starts pouring down again. I just made it, screwing in the last strip as it was starting to rain. Now the structure is covered and more rain is promised to come.

I'm not really worried about thieves here, we don't lock our doors during night and I've left tools outside over night, no worries.

Fiance just sent this picture. Got the roof materials and sheet materials for the walls. I am in a hurry to get everything up because the material is developing black mold. I am wondering if I need to prioritize the roof or the walls.

The plastic is keeping the inside relatively dry but I have no eaves for the gables so they are still exposed and get wet. So I could put on the roof first and the gables would be better protected. Or I put up the walls first, they are water proof bitumen impregnated sheets so they would also protect the walls from rain and splashing.

I want to treat the structure where with mold killer, preferrably something that soaks into the wood and prevents it coming back. Fir is better than pine at resisting mold, but I got pine. I am not sure what to use, there is copper sulfate, iron vitriol (used on wooden paneling a lot here) and commercial solutions, pine tar also kills mold well, but it makes the surface sticky until it dries, which at this time of year is never. There are also some silicate based stuff.

I suppose if I want to clean off the existing mold I should go for the roof first so I can scrub it with mold cleaning agent.

I suggest roof first, it will give (limited) protecting to the rest .

Now to start brick laying, if I can find the energy, back at work so when I get home I don't tend have the motivation or energy. My most productive days are when I got vacation.

I now regret putting my 6x 4 mtr cabin on a 150 mm thick slab of bridging grade concrete & its industrial grade engineering plastic WPM .
The bottom bearers & 40 mm wall boards have started to show what looks like as dry rot for 200mm up off the slab . This is despite being made using treated timbers 12 years ago and getting another three sprayed on coats of Rentokil wood preserver ( 30 year effective apparently ) and one painted coat of it before construction then being spray wax coated . ( Sodding slugs & snails appear to have eaten off most of the wax below the 250 mm dew point level .

The cabin has also had an annual low to the ground respray with more preservative every three years .
Putting it on a low wall like you are doing would have saved me a lot of grief as I have a 4 mtr high slope to run off any weep waters into a field .
